Hard to go wrong with either the 3rd or 4th gen. I have used a 4th gen (02 to 09) and they are quite capable off road and in mud and snow. I would go with the 6 cylinder for the conventional transfer case (not AWD), better fuel economy. They are plenty quick with the 4.0 liter. It's a great engine.
