Heck, growing up in a small group of homes on the outskirts of town, we always had strays coming into the area that people dropped off when they got tired of them. I remember seeing quite a few pits, rotty's, chow's and such getting dispatched by various neighbors right out in the middle of the street. This was, of course, after the dogs showed aggression towards the kids playing in the neighborhood. No one thought twice about it.
