When you take the scope off it releases the occular end first which needs to be lifted up in order to get the front caws out of the base. It takes about a 35-45 degree lift. To facilitate that the front ring has to be placed on the objective bell close to the end. Setting it up usually requires the help of a competent gunsmith.
