7 mags still seem like long-shooting rigs to me, rather than do-it-alls. Maybe it is because I've seen several lost animals from close-range shots and 7RM.
Bad placement or wrong bullets(assuming the reason for the loss was insufficient bullet penetration).
A 7 mag works fine at closer ranges if you use a bullet that will penetrate at high impact velocity.
