Very sorry to hear about the victim, but it comes as no surprise to me that there are plenty of bears around there. I saw one from the ski lift in Jackson Hole one summer quite a while ago, now.
I would never tramp around in those parts alone without packing protective measures. Many say that spray works well, but you have to be pretty close. Others like cowbells, but that does not impress me.
