He missed on a world record ram. His partner Jack Lentfer got the smaller sheep of a pair of very old twin rams in a band of seven monsters. Lentfer's sheep was the third largest sheep of all time. Troyer missed the biggest ram of the band but ended up with a 42 inch consolation prize.
Lentfer and Troyer would walk in where young Tanner was guiding in the late 1960s and 1970s. They would hunt with wood stocked, blued pre-64 model 70 featherweights in 270 Win and visqueen over five lb sleeping bags.
They went back into that country when they were both in their mid 70s with one of their son's and got some smaller but mature rams.

Interesting guy.

The old breed of Alaskan hunters are starting to fade.
