At election time politicians don't care about the "truth". They care about being elected. Period.
Why? Because ultimately voters don't care about the truth either. They care about easy answers that make them feel good when they fill in the oval.
Are misleading attack adds annoying? Yup. Do people respond negatively to them in test polling overwhelmingly? Yup. Do people claim they won't vote for so-and-so because of all the negative adds? You betcha.
In exit polling what are the first things people repeat for rationale as to why they voted for such-and-such?

If folks cared about the truth they would have recognized the evil in both parties long ago and elected Bob Bird for Senate!
