If you leave your camera on Auto everything it probably will be overexposed and wrong white balance.
For staters;
Tripod
ISO 100
Take off auto white balance, try daylight or shade
You will need to adjust the exposure for less than the metered amount. Either use exposure comp (-1 or -2) or use manual.
Lens and fstop will be dictated by subject. Try f8 if you are not needing depth of feild control in your shot.
In the old days people used a graduated filter, HDR has replaced this in many cases.
