" Ursul brun se intalneste cu anumite subspecii in Europa, America de Nord si Asia, fiind specia cu arealul cel mai extins dintre Ursidae. Ursul brun popula intreaga Europa, insa in ultimele secole a disparut din majoritatea regiunilor. Printre cauzele disparitiei ursului brun se numara cresterea numerica a populatiei umane, fragmentarea habitatelor, dezvoltarea agriculturii si vanatoarea excesiva. Astazi, efectivele europene se ridica la circa 14000 de exemplare, exceptand Rusia, avand habitatele pe o suprafata de peste 800000 km2. In Romania efectivele de urs brun se ridicau la circa 5600 exemplare, reprezentand 40% din efectivele europene (Mertens si Ionescu, 2000). Acest efectiv depaseste usor optimul ecologic calculat de autoritatile cinegetice, care este de 4800 exemplare. Ursii se intalnesc in zonele de munte (93% din populatie) si deal (7% din populatie), in Romania densitatea medie fiind de 8 ursi/100 km2. "

But to be honest as a field person I think that the no of bears are minimum 20% more than the specialists are saying .
They have no natural enemies and the hunting quota is very low !!!
For example the Romanian quota for bear hunting is around 600 pcs / year ...!!!
