IIRC, Halsey was the fleet commander and he intentionally sailed into the typhoon loosing the men. He should have been court-marshaled but the Navy didn't want the negative publicity that would have resulted.
I read a book (forget name) about 15 years ago that described the events and the lack of fallout.
Part of war, can't blame Halsey any more than you can blame Macarther who ordered the action.
And probably wouldn't find a more loved man amongst his men throughout the entire war.
