Check out the Tamron 70-300mm Di-II VC lens. Very sharp fairly compact, under $500 at Camera Land. Six year warranty on the lens too. I have been a working professional nature photographer and shooting Tamron lenses for many years. I would take that lens any day and use it often.That and a circular polarizer and you should be good for a little while.
