Shooting before nitried is not necessary. It does help break in the throat, but you can do that with a bronze cleaning brush with 0000 steel wool wrapped around it. Use your drill motor and brush the throat for about 10 seconds and your barrel is broke in. I have had a lot of barrels and a few bolts Melonited.
