I made a couple leather slings like the one pictured above, but they stay in my backpack until I don't need the rifle in my hands anymore, ie: when dragging a deer or stumbling through the dark woods pre-dawn or evening. One of the reasons I choose to hunt with light handy carbines (Savage 1899's in this instance) sans scopes is that they are conducive to being hand carried all day. A heavy bolt gun with a sling attached will sure as heck find its way onto my shoulder sooner or later.
