Chuck Bednarik, a Pro Football Hall of Famer and one of the last great two-way NFL players, died today. He was 89.

The top overall pick in the 1949 draft out of Penn, Chuck spent 14 seasons as one of the toughest and most feared players in the game. I played golf with Bednarik in a couple of charity outings. He was a proud man but very outspoken and bitter that he and the other NFL players of his generation were never paid anywhere near what he felt much lesser players made in modern times.

Here is the famous picture of Chuck standing over Frank Gifford with his fist clenched in celebration after knocking Gifford out of the game.
