Hand hold on one side, notches on the other. Problem solved.
I have a Booger bench made with a set of folding table legs.

My buddy built a tri-pod similar to yours. It's definitely more stable but harder to move. (No free lunches eah?)
He solved the notch vs handle dilemma by not adding either.
