I'm hoping some of you guys that have a number of builds under your belt can help me out. I thought I would post this here first, rather than up in the "Ask a Gunwriter."

I'm having a LGS build a 6.5 Creedmoor on a Remington short action and I need to provide him with a sample case/bullet so he can throat the chamber to my specs. I realize the standard advise is to throat it for the longest ogive bullet I expect to shoot, but the real question comes in with which of the below have the longest OAL to ogive and how deep (or shallow) will I need to load said bullet.

My expected bullets are the standard 130-140 grain bullets you would expect:
- 140 grain A-Max
- 130 Grain VLD
- 139 Scenar

And of course I will be working within the confines of the stock BDL magazine which I expect shouldn't be a problem.

Expert (or damn near expert) advise greatly appreciated in advance!

Thanks - Bob

Load either the 139 or 140 to 2.75 and ship it off. You'll be golden.

I'd buy a box of factory ammo in 140 AMAX and have it throated to that. If not, you won't be able to shoot factory ammo in a bind.

That's what I did, but I ran out of magazine length with the VLD bullets. The VLDs are long from the tip to ogive. I had to change from a BDL magazine to the AI detachable mags which work but are tight.

Thanks guys. I didn't thing I would run out of magazine. Not really looking to go with a detachable, maybe end up with a Wyatts.

For those who load VLDs or Scenars, what is your OAL?

Most chamber reamers are different. Make your dummy round to magazine length minus a little with the highest BC bullet you might possible use. 2.75-2.78ish in a Remington short action is what you want.

Mine used the standard tons of freebore reamer. I think it was .199". My oal with 140 hunting vlds is 2.89" and it's just a little off the lands. It shoots great but I have a Tac 30AW action and the AW mags have more length.

If I where wanting to run vlds with a standard rem box I'd probably go about .120" freebore but that may be too short for factory ammo and even if they did chamber you may have pressure problems.

A well chambered rifle can usually shoot well even with some jump.

Or you could go 6.5x47 Lapua.

This is correct.

Watch this and all will be revealed.

I recently sent off a 243 AI dummy round for a Remington 700 short action. I used a 105 HPBT seated at 2.750". It is an ADL and standard Remington box. Don't use a wyatt as there is no need.

Rogue and BurleyBoy - thanks so much for chiming in and for the information.

BurninDupont. The video helped immensely, thanks a bunch for sharing.

I was able to pick up a box of VLD AND 129 Accubond LR (I know, only box on the shelf - if Dirtfarmer found out.....) this weekend and then ordered a box of 140 grain A-Max loaded rounds, a box of 140 grain A-Max (bullets only) and back-ordered a box of 139 grain Scenars. I'll start measuring and making up dummy rounds, being certain to be able to chamber factory rounds. I'm curious to see how some of the longer bullets fit.

If your curious, here's the specs:
- 700 stainless short action
- Fluted #4 Shilen barrel cut a 23"
- Bansner stock with custom adjustable cheekpiece (LGS does his own)
- New light-pull Timney trigger (forget model name)
- lightweight 20 MOA base with cutout for action
- Blackhawk lightweight 30 mm rings
- LGS muzzle brake w/ collar
- Hoping to two-tone Cerecote a dark earth and black with same color scheme on stock
- Gre-tan firing pin
- Kampfeld fluted bolt skeletonized with Campfire knob
- Standard BDL bottom-metal

Thanks again to all for the advice, much appreciated!

Bob

.130 freebore for a 129g
.199 on a 140g

Avoid pressure spikes where possible

You're welcome best of luck to you! Another trick is if you are worried about factory rounds fitting you can pull the bullets if necessary and re-seat them or knock them down deeper as per your throat.

I would make sure the throating is right for your reloads before worrying about factory ammo but you may enjoy shooting factory ammo out of the box so this is your decision.
