My wife and I use bricks and rope to pull the limbs down and/or whatever direction you want them to go. Use a piece of rope that is long enough to allow the brick to lay on the ground, not hang in the air. Adjust the location of the brick until the limb is oriented the way you want it. Make small adjustments over time until you are happy with the results. You can make huge changes to the shape of the tree if you are patient. We picked up a puppy a couple of weeks ago. She is a Monkey-See-Monkey-Do kind of girl. If she sees you pulling weeds, she will jump right in there and start pulling weeds. Well, I was out in the yard with her the other day and made the mistake of making adjustments to some brick positions. She saw that, made a bee-line to the closest rope and started pulling. I barely got her smoked off the rope before she broke the limb.
