We were on a family vacation up in Emily Minnesota, and I went into a little gun shop I always stop at up there. Picked up a Hi Standard Supermatic Deluxe in 12 ga. for $105.00. It's been hunted hard. There's a small crack in the rear end of the fore stock that appears to have been repaired. I rolled the dice on it a bit, but what the heck, if it works, it's got to be worth what I paid for it. Anybody able to tell me anything about these guns? It appears to be a 28" plain barrel, and I'm not sure about the choke. I'll have to get it checked, as I can't find any markings on the barrel. If by chance, anyone's got a forestock for one of these I might be interested. Thanks guys.

As for choke, High Standard often used 'stars'( * maybe these?)to indicated choke. I have found them on the left side of the barrel, between the roll stamp info and the receiver. As I understand it, one star is full, two stars are modified, and three stars are improved cylinder. I'm going to guess that with the 28" barrel you will most likely have a modified or full choke. In my experience (certainly not vast) improved cylinder chokes are more common on 26" barrels.

'Tis good you rescued that shotgun! You can't buy a single shot piece of crap made in Brazil for that kind of money. Clean it up, maybe tweak a spring or two, and it will shoot great and serve you faithfully.

And think of how much entertainment value you got yourself for $105!

Thanks for the info. I've got two stars, so hopefully that makes it a modified choke. I'm looking forward to running some shells through it. If it works, I can't think I got too bad a deal on a semi-auto for $105.00. The action feels smooth, and the hammer drops, but I'm not doing any more until I get a chance to try and shoot it.

My first shotgun of my very own was that exact model and choke. I sold it about the second year of college and occasionally wish I still had it.

Still looking for front wood for it, if anybody knows where there might be one. It's got a light crack but looks to have been fixed once. I'm sure it's useable as is. I might even try to refinish the wood, but I almost hate to cover up the scratches-gives a gun some character. My dad always used to say every one of those dings was EARNED! What can I say? I've got a soft spot for well worn guns.
