Hi all.

Just wanted to thank you all for your help earlier. I went out to a small stream in the Alberta foothills last night and caught an 8" brown on a size 12 stimulator. I had 11 other strikes that I missed. Going to work on that today.

Thanks again!

Yay! A bazillion fish will come and go, but you'll always remember that first trout taken on a fly.

SamSteele:

You may not have missed. Quite often fish will see something askew at the very last moment and abort the take. Rises, splashes, and rolls are often false indicators. A tug, however, is a pretty substantial message.

In some really clear dead water, I've watched as fish repeatedly bump dry flies with their noses while their mouths are closed. Don't know if they're trying to stimulate a response or what, but such actions can be frustrating at times as they drift in the current an inch beneath ones fly.

Good luck out there and take the camera along,

I caught 7 more today. The largest was a 14" brown. It was a small stream with a lot of overhanging spruce and willow which made casting difficult. I lost a couple flies over the 5 km stretch I fished.

Thanks again for all the help. I'm hooked.

Here's a pic of a wide area on the stream.

Yea you will always remember your first trout on a fly- mine was 53 years ago and it was a Brook Trout! Like that steam! those sort of places are not hard to fish with a fly rod, once you get your casting improved! Yea at first its fustrating and you hang up a lot but keep at it! Some casting lessons will really pay off and pratice on your lawn! But you are already into fish so its going good for you, thou there are going to be times when no matter what you do, the only fish you will get is the one you go and buy at the market!
