1978 - I bought a new Colt Trooper MK III 357 Mag, 6" barrel. I promptly put 100 rounds through it without any ear plugs and went deaf, too.

I shot that gun until it was worn out (had to replace the MIM trigger in it twice, and it eventually went out of time so badly I got rid of it).
I replaced it with a S&W 586.

I came to the party late compared to some of you…..I was 20 and had heard that the "new" Series 70 Gov't. model had some kind of new fangled collet bushing that made them magically accurate…..As a college kid, I didn't have any $ to speak of but got an almost new one for $100 and found out that there was no magic!

This!

The summer I turned 13 I spent with my grandparents. I worked all summer in Dayton Ohio unloading boxcars of insulation without drawing a dime of pay. End of the summer my grandmother took me to a gun store where I picked out the Ruger. I have it with me today even though I am almost five hours from home as I write this. It is one of the things my kids have been fighting about for years waiting for me to die. grin

Ruger P97 .45, paid for about 2 months prior to even being "allowed to touch it" per NY's archaic laws.

I had shot a P90 and really liked it for some reason, so I wanted one similar. The P97 was a decent gun, but I never could like shooting it.

Sold it to a buddy, who as far as I know still has it.

4" Nickel 19. In 1975, had to get my brother to "buy" it although the lay away was in my name. All done with Mom's blessing. I was 15.

Springfield xd40. Been refinished a couple times, but I've beat the piss out of that gun, shot truck loads of rounds. Still love it and it's next to the bed waiting to defend my family's life if need be.

In 1966, when I was 16, I went to Fred Robertson's gun shop on Shiloh road in Corinth, Ms and bought (actually put on layaway) a brand new
High Standard Dura-matic .22 with a 6 inch barrel. I paid it off with money from mowing yards. It cost a whopping $39.99 and it took me several months to actually get it. I still have it today.

This Ruger SBH 44. Bought it in 1977, at the age of 16.

In the mid 60s, when I was 17 or 18 I bought a K22 and a mil surplus 1911 about the same time -- can't remember which was first.

The K22 was stolen several years later while I was in the army.

Here's the 1911

Haven't shot it in a while. Might just have to take it out for a spin in a couple of hours, have some mild target loads that shouldn't stress the old girl much.

A little .32. It saved my ass, once.

After that, most were hunting and field guns until the incident with the .32. After that, I got a lot more serious about defensive handguns which, to my mind, is the primary use of a handgun. YMMV.

Mine was purchased in 1963 at age 19. It was a Ruger Standard Auto in .22 LR. Paid $37.50 for it. It's long gone and not missed. But the Smith K-22, and especially the K-38 I bought in the next few years are missed.
I can remember putting all six rounds of Western Match, 148 gr. wadcutter ammo into groups that had all holes touching. That's about 1.5 inches, outside spread. Killed a Bluejay with it at 60 yds. Killed a small hawk at 125 yds. after I figured out I needed to hold high with the K-22. Fine guns I should have kept. E

Well, those are fine MBTA Federal felonies for a retired cop to admit to committing, even with very fine pistols.

A Dan Wesson 715 (stainless, 6 in, 357) in '82 or early '83. Added a 4 in VH barrel/shroud a few years later. Still have it.
