Has anyone purchased a remanufactured engine from Hiperformer? I need to replace the engine in my 83 CJ-7, and these guys seem pretty good after talking with them.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

They seem to have acces to many motors - you planning on a straight swap with original engine or changing it to another family? I know the Ford 302 is a popular swap on a CJ - advantages are distributor in the front (no firewall issues), light, and they run forever. Plus there are a bajillion aftermarket parts fot the 302 from the mustang crowd. EFI, carb, strokers ect.

Unfortunately in Kalifornistan, it has to pass a smog check. That means that original equipment is mandated for this year vehicle. We are going to upgrade the ignition and fuel delivery though.

My buddy that is going to be doing the work for me said something about changing out the heads to a laer model 4.0 HO unit. We're not sure it will pass inspection, but are looking into it.

Besides, I would get myself into WAY too much trouble with any more power. Despite the anemic paper stas, the 258 CID L6 does pretty darn well for my uses. I've crawled up some stuff that would make a billy goat say "f^$# it!

You got it. Anything newer than 1973-ish (I think, it might be 76) is subject to smog tests, which basically means standard equipment.

No one has accused the CARB of being intelligent or reasonable in quite some time.

I would move.....

I lived in Monterey for a year. Was nice but I couldn't live there anymore. I like it too much where a guy can cut down a tree and not have people hold a funeral for it.

I guess I would troll some Jeep forums (sorry - don't know of any) and see what they reccomend?

It the motor so gone you can't take it to a rebuild shop?

Monterey would be a nice area, if it weren't for all of the liberals.

The motor has no oil pressure, so I am a bit reluctant to rebuild mine. I'm not a mechanic, so just need to rely on what others tell me, and others have told me that there is at least some chance that I would have oil pressure problems again if I were to rebuild my motor.

A guy I know that works for Chrysler is checking to see if they have any new crate motors in inventory that he could get me. That would be ideal.

Yea - Monterey is ok - I learned to ignore the hippies.

Crate motor -- if you can find one - yep thats what I would do.

I am assuming your oil pump itself isn't bad? Or sending unit showing 0 psi but actualy running higher?

Again, I'm not a mechanic, but I have been told by several guys that oil pumps in these things don't wear out. They are incredibly simple, and the best lubricated parts in the whole engine. Everyone seems to agree that a low oil pressure problem points to worn out bearings. I could replace the berings, but would likely be back in the same boat shortly, if it cured the pressure problems at all.

I had really hoped that the sending unit or gauge was bad (I know that gauges don't go bad though), but the pressure problems were confirmed by manually testing the pressure.

Dang - yep - by the time you spent the $$ to recondition the block (magnaflux, machining etc.) and then had it re-built - you may be better off with the crate motor.
