Most markings on it seem to be oil that is nearly fossilized. i cleaned the area around the side mount and the bluing is in pretty good shape. Stock is great except the ding in the grip, the initials, and a small chip in the schnable.
It cycles well. Bore looks good. I haven't fired it. Doesn't seem to be a reason not to, but I haven't bought quite such an old gun before. The scope is interesting. There is some issue with it Re; clarity, but you can see through it and the tapered post reticle is clear. I am not sure what the utlity was, it seems to be about 1.25x, not alot of difference between it and the tang sight when looking at the tree in my backyard...perhaps it was a lot clearer when new.
I am curious, what do most of you do regarding shooting a gun of this vintage- what do you check out re: safety?
When I went back, a 1920 in 300 savage showed up, if anybody wants one. @$400. I may end up putting this up for sale shortly, just ran into some unexpected costs on my boat, and it feeds me, so takes some priority.

Sell the K, buy the M1920 if it's got condition.

Age shouldn't have anything to do with it. Condition is what's important. If you don't feel comfortable shooting it get a gunsmith to check it out first.

Thanks for the offers of help...hee hee. Condition is great, and I realize that it is a gun that was designed to be shot with modern ammo at modern pressures. I was just curious what folks do with an old gun, other than the obvious (like checking headspace, etc). Seems reasonable to shoot it and I likely will, although the boat is fixed, fishing is hot, and I am leaving for the east coast for work shortly.
I will be putting it up for sale, i am confused as to it's worth, so i will likely put it on one of those fabulous auction sites with a high reserve or start, if i can define what "high" is.
By the way, the 1920 I just saw was at "Guns Fishing and Other Stuff" in vacaville, ca. They do get some interesting stuff. There is a decent looking win model 71 in there now too, along with a bunch of weirdly sporterized military rifles of various stripes. Interesting filling out the reams of paperwork while a flat screen scrolled through photos of all kinds of action-movie looking tacticool weapons...Did a big loop around the northern, best part of the CA republic just before picking up gun. Stopped in every little shop as i am wont to do, missied Redding, but several pre-mil 99s in 300 in Yreka, another in Ferndale along with a very neat M-S 1908 that was tempting, 1 in Rio Dell.

Yeah, there is some good stuff out there- I also recall a shop in Brookings or Gold beach that has some interesting stuff from time to time... I float back and forth across that border a lot, especially for fishing, didn't get my usual permit to float the rogue this year though...
