I'm new to the Savage 99 game. Have a .300 Savage in what I believe to be a G S.n 3920XX. From the info here I believe it was manufactured in 1940. 23" muzzle to action. It has the tang crack, which I'll get after fixing soon with the help from the "good info" sticky, Has a Jostam Hygun Pad on it, and of course it has been drilled - two holes in the left side of the action. It came with a W.R. Weaver Model 298 3/4" tube scope. Screw holes are number 10, or a number 8 and stripped. . too humid today - sweating over the gun so set the task away for a cooler day.

It has open sights, but given my vision, I can't use them at more than 20 yards, and even then there are issues. I would like to add a tang peep. Since the rifle has been to Bubba, I don't need a period correct sight. I would like to hunt whitetail deer. Do you folks have any recommendations for a sight?

Thanks much!

Welcome to the Savage addiction - it only takes 1 and it's over!

First off, the scope is a 29S. The mount is likely a Weaver T7. These were available as a factory option so it might be. No way to know for sure anymore.

A Redfield 70 or Lyman 56 or 57 is probably the most popular for that vintage. Not cheap to acquire though.

Cheap would be a Williams FP. It has the same functions but is aluminum and scorned by the purists.

You could always put on a Stith mount and scope it with an older Weaver K3, or get one of the mounts made by the gentleman above and mount any type of modern scope.

Thanks for the info. I admit to having the affliction. A .250 is in my future.

Humidity is supposed to break tomorrow, and I hope to see if scope mount screws are stripped or not. I'll start the search for a tang sight.

Thanks! Light foot didn't mention that option. I think I have a few candidate scopes.
