One that isn't gonna scrap the rifleing when you insert the rod.

A one piece quality cleaning rod of the proper diameter and a bore quide, breech or muzzle version, depending on the rifle.

This. Aint no such thing as a good cleaning KIT.

Yep, proper cleaning calls for a one piece rod and bore guide IMO. I carry an Otis kit in my day pack, but after 25 years of toting it around I never once used it. I think I'll drop it. Come to think of it, I think I'll drop the day pack too.

In the field I carry a take-down rod with a jag and soaked patches in case I get some debris in the barrel.

At the bench, I put together my own 'kit'.

Much like others have said, get a proper rod, bore guide, QUALITY patches, jag and brushes and make your own kit.

I'm set with the cleaning liquid. What brand of patches do you consider quality?

I'm a cheap b*stard. For decades I would just go to a fabric store and buy a couple yards of white cotton flannel and cut it up into patches as needed. About ½ the cost of packages of the same stuff at a gun shop. A couple of weeks ago I stumbled onto a two or three lifetime supply of the stuff at a yard sale. Two big bolts of it totaling around 30+ lineal yards, six feet wide, for a whopping $10. God only knows why the lady had so much of it. God only knows why in hell I bought it...

Yep, about as cheap as one of my shooting Buds. He picks up the used ones after a match and launders them.

Let's take this a step further, what do you use for solvent?

Ed's Red, for when Hoppes would have been sufficient. I rarely shoot jacketed bullets anymore, so an old bottle of Sweet's 7.62 Solvent still serves me for copper fouling.
