If I venture over to rifle zone, it will be either a Ruger M77 7mm Rem Mag or Ruger M77 22-250....although...I have never shot a deer with my Marlin 30-30 before. That would be fun.

For me, camp is a bed&breakfast (let a pretty woman make my bed and cook my meals, and keep me company over a glass of scotch at the end of the day - shower assistance not included though, darn it ). Rifles taken along this year will probably be a custom Savage M1899 .22 HiPower I built earlier this year and my M54 Winchester .30-30 that hasn't had a run in the woods for a long time. Of course, that choice will probably change 20 times between now and December...

I need do some more population reduction in my neighborhood and I plan on doing that with an Excaliber 330. Been counting deer on trail cams and as of now there are two who've set up living quarters about 100 yards from my garden and two more not more than 150 yards in the opposite direction. There's four more that I don't know where they live and am not entirely sure they are still alive. All those but for one are antlerless. So, there should be 4-6 bucks anyway nearby too since I didn't kill any of them last year, and only does and fawns were killed on the roads as far as I know.
It'd be nice to take about 8-10 out of the section and get the population back down to what it can carry which I figure to be 4-6. If I can reduce them to that there's a chance that taking out 1-2/year I can keep up with infiltration and reproduction. There's an area a mile away that I often enough see two dozen or more in though, and I may be just wishful thinking that I can whittle them down.

Remington 7600 35 Whelen 200 grain Cast Lead. This is my big experiment for the year. Over the summer I started using powder-coated cast lead bullets. It's shooting velocities more like a hot 35 REM, but it should kill deer just fine.

Not much to eat there come late fall and they move out. The odd thing is that road kill on 8 is almost non existent there, but not uncommon half a mile east. Dangerous driving in my neighborhood too.
Savage MLII. Might be kicking it up a notch this year. I've been turning XTP's inside out since I got it, so I'll probably switch to a 300 grain in .458 and running a slower powder to get it up around 45-70 speeds. I've got some Barnes's if that doesn't work.

Of all the rifles I own, I usually grab one of two my old faithfull guns.
My WW Featherweight M70 in 7x57, or my Rem. Classic in .264 Win Mag.
And of course, there's always at least one AR-15 in .556 that lives in the truck for Coyotes and Hogs when I'm driving around the Ranch checking feeders or fences.

If hunting in Zone 236 this year, I will have a 12 ga Beretta 391 or a 20 ga NEF slug gun in hand. If I can figure out why it went wonkers in time, a 12 ha Mossberg 930 will get the nod.

I don't know for certain what the status is down there, but I wouldn't be a bit surprised if it is open for bow south of 8. They Hunt ducks on Forest lake inside the city limits.
You have to know where to look for the deer on the south side. If you get off on the 2nd street NW exit watch in the pines next to the exit ramp you see them laying there right in people's back yards all the time. Out around the high ground in the swamp that the city burns tree waste on is another place to keep an eye on. You see more one the north side, but there's half again as many on the south. I'd hate to have a garden or shrubs in any of the houses that back up to the swamp.
There's always been bears around there. They tour a good size area in the spring and tear up bird feeders. Back before the mid 70's the DNR would come out with a trap is anyone reported bears. They don't much care anymore. Last spring I saw one almost in downtown St Croix Falls coming out of a residential area in the middle of the day.
In ky I'll take my Ruger M77 tanger in 300winmag loaded with 150gr PowerPoint's and my rem 700 sps 7-08 loaded with 139gr american whitetails.
In TN I'll have my ruger m77 stainless 7-08 loaded with american whitetails and will also dig out the mauser in 30-06 I built. Probably use 150gr fusions in it

Hey! My house is not real far from there, but it most assuredly is legal here. I am not in Forest Lake. I wouldn't call it hunting here though. Plain and simple it's just killing, much like dispatching varmints.
I might consider going down south of 8 after everything freezes up and there's a little snow on the ground, but I am too old to be trying to drag one out of that swamp before freeze up. I still have one of my kid's toboggan/sleds that is a piece of cake to drag a deer on. Just bungee Bambi on, and even an old out of shape guy like me can drag one a few miles on snow and not even need a rest break as long as the snow isn't too deep. Like I said, that area ought to part of 601.

I'll be carrying my .243 Savage Axis as per my heart doctor's orders. Waiting in the wings will be my Marlin .44 Mag. Should I develop a case of wanderlust and head into the slug zones, my little Mossberg 20 gauge stands at the ready. I've got two .270s, a Winchester Classic and a Howa, both shoot very well, and have killed many deer.
But I've got a 1960 Marlin 336SC .30/30 that I need to blood. Heck, I'm backstepping so far that I'm gonna use factory ammo, too.....................

Since I sold all my rifles except my 35 Rem Marlin dad said I can borrow his Mod 70 6mm Featherweight. Last time I borrowed a 6mm from him he said if I get a deer with it I can have it....doubt he'll make that offer this time though
Tzone: I will be using one of three of my longer range Deer Hunting Rifles. #1: Remington 700 VLS in 260 Remington with Leupold 6.5x20 variable. #2: Remington 700 Sendero in 270 Winchester with Leupold 6.5x20 variable. #3: Ruger 77 MK II V/T in 25/06 Remington with Leupold 6.5x20 variable. I am going to concentrate on Whitetailed Deer this year and will be Hunting on a huge ranch with 95% Whitetails and only 5% Mule Deer on it. Longer shots (400 yards or so!) are the norm on this ranch and I usually Hunt from secreted positions 1/4 to 1/2 mile from the VarmintMobile so the heavier weights of these Rifles are no problem in fact its an advantage. There is an off chance I will bloody a new'ish Rifle on a tasty Whitetail doe or two also this fall - its a Ruger 77 MK II in 243 Winchester with a Leupold 6.5x20 EFR variable scope on it. Well I sold my early Remington 700adl '06 to pay for parts for my truck so I'm taking my Winchester 94ae thutty-thutty. The only other centerfire I own.I'm just having trouble picking what sights to use. I like the view through the williams 5d better but the group's are way better with the factory semi buckhorn. Good thing I got time to practice, beware of the one gun man, he'd best be good cause otherwise he's going home empty.

Probably should leave the Winchester in camp and bring my Marlin 22 anyways. The deer will be pretty poor again this year in Northern Mn and the partridge and snowshoe hair will be thick as ticks again. Vilas county WI probably won't be to much better either.

I was thinking about this thread this morning, and just wanted to say something. This thread has been around in various incarnations since I have been going online. That predates the Internet. I was reading versions of this thread back when it was BBS technology and 300 baud dialup. I kept a distributor's catalog next to the Apple II, so I could look things up.
I was thinking about how things change. Back when I started, I had only 1 deer rifle (Rem 742) and a shotgun (Rem 1100) . I was longing for a Rem 700 in 30-06 and Service Merchandise had one for $300, but I could not come up with the scratch and settled for a beat-up used Win 670. By comparison everything else seemed far superior. The distributor's catalog had just b&w line drawings, so it either had to be in manufacturer's catalog, or I had to look at the drawing and imagine. I think that was why I never paid much attention to a Savage 99 back in those days. The drawings were so poor.
This was all on the front end of my hunting career. I still had not taken a deer. Back in the early 80's, there just weren't many deer. I'd been hunting, I'd seen deer, but I still had not closed the deal. I was still single. I was still wearing three-piece suits to my job and I was driving 3 hours on Friday nights to hunt on Saturday and then drive back on Sunday, because there was no hunting on Sundays, and all I could do was listen to the Bengals lose on the radio.
You guys gave me a lot of good ideas over the years. I am now starting the back end of my deer rifle collecting. I gave the Winchester 670 to my youngest son last year. I also probably bought my last 30-06, a nice Ruger Hawkeye. This is not my last deer rifle, but I'll probably explore other avenues from now on. I've got a nice rack, and I have had a ball filling it. I just wanted to say thanks to y'all.
How come everyone packs multiple guns? Is it part of the strategy for spouse management - honey I took four guns and didn't get a deer. I need five next year. . It does make for more exercise loading and unloading the truck, but I can think of more effective conditioning. I can't think of the last time I brought multiple rifles. If they aren't trustworthy, they go down the road.

I take multiple guns In case I wake up in a different mood, and want to carry the 257AI instead of the 257. Or the M99 instead of the M70... Or I want to try the 80gr TTSX instead of the 120gr Speer...

When I used to hunt away from home, and my sons were with me as well as a friend or two, I always took a spare, usually a .348. Anybody can fall and bang up a gun or scope and it was just prudent for someone to have a spare along. Now, hunting 20 minutes from home, I can just go home and get something (or take a nap and wait for the next day).
If I had a woman that I had to trick in order to buy a new rifle, she'd go down the road.

There are a bunch of reasons for me.
One gun can usually get it all done. However, stuff happens, especially with telescopic sights. Most all of my guns are scoped. I've had two instances over the years where something has happened to a rifle and I suspected the scope had been compromised. Rather than try to figure it out in the field, I just went to the backup.
When I started deer hunting, I was primarily a bow hunter. I hunted with a rifle from the same stands I hunted with a bow. Treestands have their own requirements. Usually that translates out to shorter barrels, low power scopes, and shorter LOP. When I started hunting other kinds of venues, my needs changed. When I'm hunting one of my long, narrow pastures, I prefer higher magnification, and a chambering that won't start to poop out at 150 yards.
Another good reason is weather. I have rifles that I just do not like taking out in the rain. I'm sure I would not wreck them, but I'd hate to muck up the finish or warp the stock. I now have other rifles that do not require any fuss, and for the past decade, I kept a Remington 7600 as my designated "Rain Gun."
There is also a huge difference between warm and cold weather. I need a longer LOP when I am down to a sweatshirt on a warm afternoon versus the multiple layers needed to survive a morning sit after an arctic cold front has come through.
Lastly, there's the fact that sometimes you feel like a nut and sometimes you don't. Some days I really want to hunt with my Garand, or take out my Rem 1100 with slugs and pound the cedar thickets. Sometimes I like to sit with a nice bolt gun on my lap and contemplate. Normally, once I bag a deer, that rifle goes out of the rotation and something else goes in.
I will be packing multiple guns, because lifes too short to hunt with just one, but this one may get hunted the most. Just finished bedding a 700SA 260 Rem 8 twist into a McSwirly.

This one a little, .30-06 Ruger TS with factory Hornady 180 gr spire points.
Or this model 70 EW .300 WSM that has been good to me, or at least I've been lucky with it.
But mostly this. A 700 ADL with the barrel cut back to 21 inches in .308 win. I have swapped the scope out with a Leupold Mark AR with T2 adjustments and Mil-Dot. Haven't settled on a load yet, but have some 125 and 165 SST's to try out.
Its going to get some 50 Gr. TTSXs shot through it at warp speed . If it doesn't like them, the norma; 55 grain Hornady load should work nicely indeed.

Got a new to me 1941 Savage 99R in 300 Savage that's crying to be taken out. Just have to put a Leupold on and sight her in... the POS scope that came on it was done in by the UPS shippers.
As backup/second rifle.. dunno. Hoping a rifle that's been pending at a gunsmith for 2 years will be back in my hands by October and I can take that. Otherwise.. my dad's Marlin 336, or a 99T, or my lucky 99EG, or who knows.

3.700 in .300 WM.. My old reliable. 26" Lilja. This one has killed more big game than all the rest.. Pack this one in case I get a long shot at a really trophy buck..
I haven't hunted my M70 30-06 SPRG in several years, so I checked the zero at the range last Friday - it's up first. Once I kill my first deer I will switch to my M88 in 308 WIN. I usually shoot two deer per season; if I shoot a third I will probably be swamp hunting with a M94 WIN or a M1894 Marlin.

Well, don't have the freezer full, but I did whack one Sunday eve with the crossbow. She's of course broken down and in a cooler on ice now and packing into the freezer starts this evening. Nice big yearling doe I've been watching for a month or so now.
I am flat out impressed with Rage 2 inch cut broadheads and the crossbow. She walked out facing me and I just waited until she got herself situated just right and put it in about mid neck and pointed just above her heart. Took out about a foot of jugular and carotid and then opened the aorta just above the heart. Two crow hops and she flopped about six feet from where she stood. A couple kicks and that was that. Cut bone all the way down the neck. Lighted nocks are really nice! Under canopy just after sunset you can see it go where you pointed it and know it's all over.
If the Indians had those broadheads and decent bows, the the cowboys would have had a rougher go.
Browning 71 will make its maiden voyage in our deer woods, overkill but it will be fun testing out the 348 win on a deer. Trying to talk a buddy into taking it on a moose hunt.

My 17 year old son will probably use his grandfather's 1967 Browning BAR in .270. Either that or my pre-64 Model 70 in .308 Norma Magnum that he took an 8 point with last year.
I will probably bring my 2 newest rifles, a 1983 Marlin 336AS 30-30 and a brand new Tikka T3 Lite 30-06.
We will be hunting at my wife's cousin's place in Colorado county, Texas.
Bear hunting, it will be a custom Fox Sterlingworth in 45-70 with lots of history with it. Deer will be a pre-war model RS Savage99 in .300 Sav and a barrel band H carbine in .300 Sav as well. I post up some pictures later. Hopefully I'll anchor a bruin this weekend. A hound hunt is on the docket for Saturday and Sunday.
