I have my opening day dove hunt set up and counting down the days until Sept 1st. I will be shooting this 12 gauge Navy Arms percussion muzzle loader with I/C and Mod choked barrels. It is breaking clays solidly with a load of 80 grains FF Goex and 1 1/8 ounces of #8 shot. Hope the birds will be there.

It will be either my 20 ga or 28 ga Beretta O&U
A Doe walks out of the woods today and says, that is the last time I'm going to do that for Two Bucks.

This year should be great, again- there were two wheat fields planted this year between my farm and the Arkansas River. Last season was crazy- birds flew out of their roost trees across the river to the wheat just at sunrise, fed for an hour, and then returned to the trees, providing several hours of excitement. Youngest son and I only needed 45 minutes of flight time to limit out opening day.
I will again be using my Benelli Legacy 28 ga., with Fiocchi #7.5's, both my sons shoot Browning 12 ga. and Winchester AA 7.5's.

I'm going to scout out a public hunting area tomorrow that has a wheat field. Dove hunting is just a few years old in Iowa and is still a foreign concept to many. So pressure--I think--will not be too high there. But I will have a couple of options.

I will be hunting in Chowchilla California. I'm gonna be using a Remington 887 and shooting the federal target/dove loads. Last year we had an amazing hunt in an almond orchard just accros from an alfalfa field. We also have a spot out near a dry creekbed next to a vineyard that does really well. I cannot wait until the opener and this year my fiance will have her first shoot! Good luck everybody and limit out!

I will give it my first go ever. Don't have any planted crops to hunt, so I will try decoys in the best place I can find on our place....which is to be determined. Don't think the hay fields will be cut by the opener, so that will limit my options I guess.

We've had a lot of doves through August until the last half week or so when a very cool front came down upon us. I mean 40's at night, 60's and low 70's daytime. I love it but an afternoon of scouting yesterday showed less than half the numbers I'd been seeing. I expect the cool weather pushed those birds south.
The opener next week may be fairly quiet.

Had 15 down by 8:45 this morning. Waterholes are the key out here. Really fast at first light then picked up just after 8. Going again in the morning

There were not as many birds as I would have liked. Managed to kill 15 but it took all day to do it. I had one white wing and one Eurasian in the bag along with mourning doves. Recuperating from sun burn, dehydration, and a worn down azz today.

Got my 15 bird limit in about an hour with 40 shells. Not bad since I haven't picked up a shotgun since last season.

13 birds with 22 shells using my Beretta 20 O&U. Not too bad since I haven't fired a shotgun at a moving target in two years because of rotator cuff tear.

I'm heading out with my Franchi 20 gauge this Saturday. Got it 25 years ago as a teenager. It's been inoperable for the last 10 years and I just haven't gotten around to getting it fixed. Finally bit the bullet and got it fixed and ready to go. Excited to see if it remembers how to bust the birds.
