I'm searching for a beater lever gun as a favor for my boss. Something like a totally grey rat, extra holes, etc. that I won't feel bad refinishing for him. He just wants a hunting rifle, period, and being a lefty I'm steering him in the direction of a lever gun. Only requirement is that it needs to be functionally sound with a decent bore. Cheaper the better, as I'm fronting it to him and he'll pay me as he can. Naturally I would prefer to set him up with a Savage, but a Winchester or Marlin would be considered. Preferably in a common caliber, ie: .30-30, .300, etc. as I really don't want to get into making custom cartridges for him too. Anything out there?

I'll piggyback on this thread and am trying to get another collector buddy into something lever-action in .30-30. Of course he has buddies who reload so other calibers considered.

A true left hander may need a tang safety....99. Them tang safeties are very expensive? I think a scoped Marlin would be the way 2 go for a lefty? Unless your buddy is half your age and can see.

I'm left handed and I've used lever safeties so much I find myself reaching under the lever for the safety when I'm shooting the tang safety 99's. It must be engrained after using lever safeties for 57 years.
wyo1895 With Savage never say never. For a copy of my book on engraved Savage lever actions rifles send a check for $80 to; David Royal, p.o. box 1271, Pinedale, Wy., 82941. I will sign and inscribe the book for you. [email protected]

Went with Rory's 99T shooter. I have a hard time calling any T a 'beater'. Most excellent choice though!!
