GSPfan: I have 10 (ten) pre-64 Model 70's in caliber 243 Winchester, alone! So yeah - I am of the mindset that having "duplicate calibers" is of NO detriment or consequence at all. In fact I like that situation. Had one of my hard copy inventories out and decided to go ahead and see how many duplicate calibers I have and it came to 11 (eleven) calibers I have more than ONE of. And if I would not have "traded off" a 358 Winchester Featherweight a while back I would have 12 (twelve) sets of multiples. When it comes to Winchester pre-64 Model 70's I say, the more the merrier. Long live The Riflemans Rifle! Hold into the wind VarmintGuy P.S.: Whoops I forgot to include a triplicate set of 300 Winchester Magnums I own (two Westerner-Alaskans and a Bull Gun) so my number should indeed be 12 (twelve) sets of multiples.

bsa, it's great that that beauty has stayed in the family. Not long after my dad got his first A-5 he gave me his L.C. field grade 12 ga. 30"" full & mod. that was a wedding present from my mom in'41. Several years ago I actually toyed with the idea of having 4" removed, a set of mod. and imp. cyl. chokes installed and slaying quail with it. Needless to say, I DID come to my senses and left it alone.
John Good for you John. You would have deserved a lashing if you would have cut 4" off of an LC smith.....Damn.. . Actually, my Sterlingworth has a 30" full and modified barrels. Back then, they were made for paper wads and were choked a little tighter than todays standards, so mine is actually about an extra full and improved modified.... Shoots pretty tight with modern ammo...
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

bsa, you're certainly right about the tight chokes. Full meant FULL. Was asked once not to bring that same Smith back to the Marine Rescue Squadron's turkey shoots out of "fairness". Told 'em I would meet them halfway and only shoot the right bbl:)

Ha ha... That is funny.... They laugh when you pack an old side by side out to the line, until you start dusting them with it... Then it's a whole different look you get...
