Not a deer rifle but I took my dads single shot 16 out last year for opening day. I never really hunted with it but he has taken alot of deer with it, and I thought I would take it out in remembrance of him.

Thanks slug at about 50 yards from the ground. He walked by me the first time and I was kicking my ass for not grabbing the 30-30. But when he came back through 10 minutes later I took the shot and it dropped in its tracks.

It is a Montgomery Wards Model 12. My dad bought it at a thrift store for ten bucks in the 60s.

There was an interesting book called "The Deer Rifle" by LR Wallak out in the 70's which I found while unpacking some boxes last night.

No idea who he is/was, but he covered an awful lot of cartridges so it might be worth looking around for a copy.

This year a Remington 700 308 with 125gr Ballistic tips will be the Deer rifle. Effective but boring. In past years 7mm rem mag, 300 savage, 30-06, 22-250, 6.5x55, 300HH, 243win have all been boringly effective.

Every year I go back to a TC encore in 35 Whelen. The Barnes ttsx are magic for deer.

My Marlin 336SC is a 35 Rem. It is not drilled and tapped so I use it with a Williams peep. Haven't gotten a shot at a deer with it yet, but I'll work on that this season. It sure shoots targets good.

You guys are killing me with those pics of old rifles i love classic weapons. I drew two deer tags this year in South Dakota one in the black hills and one in the open prairie of wet river SD. Ill be using a savage 99 in 30-30 that was made in 1904 for my hills deer hunt and something a little more modern and flatter shooting for the wide open spaces.

I get more of a kick out of what I kill it with than what I kill, "Score" means absolutely nothing to me.

I have gotten to the point that this statement pretty much sums up my feelings about deer hunting exactly. What rifle I hunt with might depend on the stand I plan on using, but I more often find myself using the stand that suits the rifle I want to hunt with.

These are a few that are in the mix for this fall.

This year I was hoping to make the Savage Slam. A deer with each of the proprietary Savage cartridges. So, first up is my 1912 22 High Power Model 1899 H. It's topped with a 3X Malcolm scope. The rifle lettered as being sold to the Malcolm Rifle Telescope Co. in 1912. I took it to the farm Sat and Sun. Only had time to take a few shots from the 50 yard bench, but I was happy. I'm getting my left knee replaced on Nov 4th, so I may be stuck on the ground this season. We'll see how it turns out. By the way, I love those 95 Winchesters. I let mine go last year, it was in 35 Winchester and made in 1910, Joe.
