Was looking at buying a very well kept model 70 featherweight for 600.00 It looks like the stock was cut for a recoil pad. Don't have a clue why this is bothering me but it does. The recoil pad was good back in 1980's but will be replaced with a newer one on the market. I have seen pre 64 lightweights sell for 700 with cut stocks. What do you guys think. I know there is no collectibility to post 64 so maybe I will wait on a pre 64.

For my money I'd rather have the pre 64 with a cut stock and a replacement pad plus the benefit of controlled round feeding. I assume the post 64 gun is a push feed model.

Is the lop on a featherweight different than a standard stock. I have never owned one but I think they would be the same. The lop from trigger to end of wood is 13". This Rick

I recently bought an 80's model XTR Sporter in 7mm Remington Magnum from Williams Gunsight for $475. Stock had a few dings on one side only. It had been had been shot some but never taken out of the stock. Took a minimal amount of cleaning to get the bore spotless. No worn bluing anywhere. I don't know if a featherweight would be worth that much more or not.

Cut stock would bother me too, wouldn't even consider buying the gun. Standard LOP on pre64 M70's is 13 1/2 in.

You should be able to buy a pristine post 64 featherweight for 600ish

You should be able to buy a damn pristine XTR fwt made in the very early 80's (WRA if you are lucky) for $600.00. I sold this one for about that much....

If the rifle in question isn't as nice as this one, I'd venture to say it isn't worth the asking price...

By the way, what in the hell is a pre 64 lightweight???? If you are talking about a pre 64 featherweight and you can buy them for $700.00 all day, you better jump on those deals!!

This is only a suggestion. You don't need to listen or follow thru, but I still say if you can find a nice pre 64 fwt for $700.00. BUY IT!!!!!! Sell the stock that has had a recoil pad installed. You can (most times) get $150+ out of them. Put that money towards a nice Mcmillan hunters compact and you'd be so far ahead, you'd be thanking me later.....:

Only pushfeed featherweight I would look for are the ones made between 1979 and 1980 and good luck made by WRA.. Yeah they aren't the pie in the sky CRF pre64 but they are damn good rifle.

Just one question? Why are some of you put off by a recoil pad, but not so with a replacement synthetic stock. I used to halve a source for repro Winchester red pads.

Back when the daughters were in college, and I was jockeying guns to help pay cash for schooling, I rescued a goodly number of Winchesters. I never cut an original stock, but replaced more than a few with the knock off pads. All I have to say is that they were well received by buyers.

Same with Brownings. I had a source for Browning pads too. Replace the old white lines with something classic and they sold well.

I suppose the collector angle is where the answer lies. But a lot of us like shooters, and shooters are better at a certain recoil level with a nice pad.

You'll understand when you drop an action into a good McMillan stock... Sounds like you haven't done that. Try it some time.. wink
