I just talked to Gunner. The shot on the Cape Buffalo was about 45 yards in some thick jess with the animal quartering hard toward him. Gunner hit the bull at the juncture of the neck and shoulder, and the bull whirled and ran about 60 yards where it stopped. The second shot through the shoulders put the bull down for good. This is an old, hard bossed, big bodied dagga boy.

The zebra was another quartering shot, and the bullet struck the front shoulder. The zebra ran about 100 yards and collapsed. The kudu was a monster, going 56 1/2 inches.

A Shiloh Sharps No. 3 Sporter in 45-70 shooting a 525 grain paper patched bullet over 75 grains of KIK 3f black powder did the trick. Gunner said that the only thing he would change is the 30-1 alloy, which he felt was too soft.

A two shot kill on a Cape buffalo and a 56 1/2 inch kudu is about as good as it gets on one trip. Welcome home, you did it in style!

Sounds like the trip to take.
Pics. and video would be nice, but bet he's a little tuckered out for Monday night.
45/70 Sharps, what a way to shoot those animals. No Scope, buckhorn sights and PP 525 grain bullet along with a little Black Powder.
Sounds like had great time.

Many Thanks for the welcomes and congratulations Gents.

A clarification to make, the Kudu was taken with my 400 Whelen bolt rifle, simply to thick in the Mopani thickets for my Sharps.

Pics to follow soon.

I am a forever changed man for that trip, it was absolutely unbelievable.smile

Africa will do that to you. Sharps and .400 Whelen? All you need was a time machine back to 1930.

ET.

I have to ask. Could you clear this up me.

You say he shot the buff the the Sharps, but in the photo see him holding a bolt rifle with the Buffalo. In the other picture the sharps is over the buff's head with out him holding the sharps. Did he shoot the buff with the sharps or the bolt rifle??? please explain it.
If he did shot that buff with the .45-70 and black powder he has a set of baseballs fore sure in his under pants.

Groan!! I just don't understand this one. Standing over a great Buff with a rifle he did not use to bring him down with, especially a .45-70 sharps with a led bullet and black powder when the mind set is using a high end double using solid bullets.
But my hat is off to him for doing it.

Fine pic with deeply important connotations,

...e.g. "the back up rifle".

Gotta' say there was a WTF moment,....I got pretty confused by the initial appearance of this one, too.

Details on the back up rifle ?

Relax, quit groaning.

The PH should be holding the thing (after all, it's HIS rifle,)and some sorta' caption / qualifier re: WTF's up with THIS should have been attached,...

but it's just a minor glitch, and shouldn't be any source of heartburn or unsettled bowels.

The videogapher pulled these stills from the DVD he shot of the different animal hunts. Must be a beginner as he doesn't appear to have much sense of flow or content.

It's my 400, most likely just wiped it down with the oil rag and got called over for a quick pic, the sweat salt was flowing freely, kept both guns close the entire hunt.

Bad form I suppose on my part.

Some here on the Fire may conclude (not me, of course) that you were hiding that ole primitive, dark side clunker, dressing up the photo op with that very classy .400W... grin

Man, you guys sensitive about that photo, or what... wink

Gunner fessed up, it was his .400.

When you tried to put it off on the PH, I thought to myself, that's a nicer rifle than you'd expect a PH to be carrying. Their guns usually look pretty well "used", that one is pristine.

Big question, do you guys now ban gunner from the dark side club for his (unintentional) faux pas... frown

Just asking, wouldn't want to be accused of stirring up anything... cool

"Dark Side" HQ is somewhere in upstate NY, IIRC. You'd better contact them there.

I'm a "Clan of the Border Rat" type, and if I had any beef whatsoever about this, it would be that Gunner's failed to post a pic or two of the local hot chicks. My old compadre elkhunternm holds annual seminars on this, if anybody's interested.

GEEEEZZZ, Gunner shot the buff TWICE with the Sharps killing it dead. So he had a back-up rifle along for the ride. It remained unemployed under it was Kudu time.

Thanks for all the compliments Gents, an upcoming appointment with an I.T. guy at my Wifes work who will make copies of the video, I'll get a copy to Evil Twin so all that are interested can watch about a 30 minute video of the hunts.

Thanks again Men,

Yep.......

I believe the correct term would be "enabler" (maybe gun-pimp).

I'd trust him with my kid, no doubt.

No sir, solids are not recommended nor should they by used on Cape Buffalo. In the old days, yes, because cup and core bullets failed, but today, PHs eschew solids except for elephant, rhino and hippo on DRY LAND. j

I'll always have a Sharps rifle accompany me on any return trips to Africa, will certainly have one of the 'boomers along too, how wili I ever justify ownership of an 8-Bore 577 NE, 505 Gibbs, 500 NE, 458 WM or 375 H&H to Wifey if they sit idling on humid free air in the safes? grin

Did I hear "justify"...?

Had a guy fly down from Shreveport a few years ago in a Citation 10; we were working on a business deal. My pard and I were drooling over that airplane. This guy had a couple of ranches in NM and I asked if the NM ranches help justify that bird. His comment, you can't justify it, just gotta want it...

I remembered that.
