Figure you guys swap out plenty of scopes. I want to mount a 1" target scope with said 50mm objective bell on a 1982 Ruger.

High rings or extra high?

If there's a scope on it now, measure the objective, measure the clearance. Add half the difference between the size of the current objective and the objective size of the new scope (actual size) to the current scope's diameter and determine if it will clear with the rings you have. If not, figure 1/8" extra clearance for each height increment using Ruger rings. ShopRuger has a guide online and the Leupold site has a tool for their scopes and rings. The guidelines are only estimates as the actual outside diameter of various scopes varies.

How about I skip the algorithms and someone with a 50mm scope on a Ruger M-77 just tells me if they used a high or extra high set?

Straight from Ruger. Know that there will always be variables like how long the scope tube is. Maybe it helps.

I have a 50mm objective scope on an M-77 Hawkeye (same as Mk-II). A #4 up front and a #5 in back leave _just_ enough clearance to get a Butler Creek cap on the objective bell. The cap _almost_ touches the barrel. IIRC, Ruger refers to this combination as "medium."

Sorry that I don't know how the receiver and rings differ (or don't?) between the old M-77 and the newer Mk-II/Hawkeye.

I've got a Monarch UCC 3.5-10x50 on a M77 MarkII 280Rem using the factory medium rings.

the problem with one mans answer for your particular issue is as already stated by others is the scope length, model, brand can have a huge impact on what works and more importantly what wont work. Bushnell Elites and old B&L Elites are long scopes and the objective bell sits further out along the taper of the barrel contour and can sit lower because of that issue than say a shorter model, brand scope. what brand scope you trying to mount and what barrel does your rifle have?

Ah, got it. The objective bell moves out as scope length increases & the barrel contour decreases.

It's a new Benchmark barrel but matches the slim original Ruger 22" contour.

Scope is an inexpensive Simmons Blazer 6-24X pretty long maybe 15-16".

Jim, thank you for the explanation.
