How much more can a 30 caliber magnum be refined? Already a ton of well thought out variations. Can't wait to see it though.

You are most likely correct, but I still think that the Nosler case makes the most sense due to it's length allowing it to fit into more actions compared to the UltraMag's, for example, that require extended mag boxes for using heavy for caliber bullets.

A month or two ago Eastman's Hunting Journal had an article on the new 30 Nosler.

YAWN! Another 30 caliber magnum that is going to be so close to the 300Wby, 300Win, 300Ultra as to not matter one bit.

Does anybody own a 26 or 28 Nosler? Several have the 26. IIRC, Ringman, Dirtfarmer & Rcamigula. Search the Big Game Reloading forum.

MuskegMan,
I have a 26 Nosler too. Bought the test rifle they sent me for a couple of articles, so obviously like the cartridge and rifle. The brass is really good, which I consider a major factor, and so far I haven't worn any out.
Was also impressed with the 28 Nosler I tested for an upcoming article in American Rifleman, but for most of my hunting the 26 seems plenty so didn't buy it.
Nosler's sending a 30 to test as soon as they have brass. The case is slightly shorter than the 26 and 28.

I've chambered a couple recently for a cartridge which must be similar; the 30 Newton. Nosler could have just brought it out but if their efforts with the 280 AI are any indication, they would have screwed up the dimensions. GD

Does anybody own a 26 or 28 Nosler? I have a 28 Nosler and so far it seems to be a good cartridge to work with. Right now I'm just breaking in the rifle doing the clean and fire thing after every round so I haven't done any load work yet. The rifle is a Legendary Arms Professional, my only criticism is the muzzle brake but it is removable. Quality of fit and finish is excellent and the action is silky smooth, actually feeds so smooth that I've caught myself lifting the bolt a couple times to see if a round really did chamber. A 10 shot clean and fire group made 1.2 " with a load probably mid-range for a 7 Mag. I didn't think there was any point in burning out the barrel right away as some have suggested, however barrels are still made every day they say.

greydog,
The dimensions of the commercial version of .280 AI are not due to Nosler but the committee otherwise known as the Sporting Arms and Ammnunition Manufacturers Association (SAAMI). Every new American commercial cartridge has to go through an approval process, during which other SAAMI members can voice any suggestions about dimensions before final approval.

MD, That's not the story I got from a reamer maker involved in the proceess. According to him, Nosler was heavily involved in the establishment final dimensions and reference to the committee as the source of the final dimensions is, quite simply, a cop-out. Regardless, it was a screw-up and one can't help but wonder why final dimensions were not simply based on Ackley's original drawings which, in this particular instance, unlike some others, contained no errors. Whether the result was due to practices in Remington's shop, the death of an engineer mid-project, or a faceless committee, Nosler put their corporate name on it. Not really all that important and my original reference was made somewhat jokingly. GD

I attended the SHOT Show where the annual SAAMI meeting took place that approved the .280 AI dimensions, and that's not what I heard from more than one member who attended the meeting. The final dimensions were not what Nosler had suggested, and were modified by another member. Yeah, Nosler went along, but they'd been working on the project for a considerable period (along with another company), and both had spent considerable money in the process. What were they supposed to do, pick up their ball and go home because they didn't get exactly what they proposed?
No, not really important at all, but Nosler got some flak over the dimensions when the round came out. Eventually that pretty much died out, but not entirely.

Well, picking up the ball and going home is probably what I would have done but I'm kind of old and grumpy! With old guys like me to continue their bitching, the flak may not die out completely for a while yet! As it is, I just don't chamber the 280 AI anymore (I don't need the work so I can do this easily enough)unless it is the 30 degree version which I cut to the time-honored dimensions. To one and all, I apologise for the thread derail. GD

Just to muddy the waters a little bit, what about the 27 Nosler? The local SW has a set of RCBS dies for the 27 Nosler- die number 26401. Is also listed on the RCBS website. Steve

Steve Thank God they're coming out with it. There needed to be something to fill in that .02" gap between the 260 and 280 Nosler!

Any idea on the rollout for the 29 Nosler? Yup... I have it on good authority ( some guy in the Parking Lot over at Nosler) that it will be brought out right after the 31 Nosler, and 34 Nosler...then the 29.... Actually my source was a fortune cookie, but don't tell anyone..

So we are finally going to get what Ruger should have done in the first place. Because those 30 & 338 compact mags changed everything.

Saw an old thread on another board about .30/26 Nos and .30/28 Nos etc..
One claimed Nosler already has SAAMI approval for 26,27,28,30,33,35 Nosler but offered nothing as proof and IDK if it can be checked.
