Endeavored to remove the Ruger barrel band front sight from my Mike Palazzo abortion in .35 Whelen Improved.

The guy used red Lock-Tite to install a 6-40 screw, which of course, instantly snapped off when I tried to budge it. I ended up hack- sawing through the screw laterally and then heating up the [bleep] solder job to remove the sight.

Underneath, I found pitting corrosion already at work (3 months since alteration)on the barrel. Judging from the amount of work it took to remove with emery cloth, I am guessing there was at least .010" depth to the pitting.

Is this typical of silver soldering? I cannot begin to guess which kind of solder was used, it melted with my propane torch and there wasn't much run-off during heating.

If a propane torch melted it, we're talking a VERY low silver content,....5 %, probably

Your "Artisan" did not properly
* choose his flux (e.g. too STRONG)
* CLEAN the joint surfaces
* Tin the joint surfaces
* Seat and solder the joint with adequate "wet out"
* Neutralize the joint afterwards with washing soda and copious quantities of boiling water.

It's not like you can go back in a month and neutralize Silver solder, it's got to happen immediately...
The voids he left would have bled angry rust forever.

Tech tip, ....don't leave voids in the first place,....it's called knowing how to solder.

Thanks crossfire, I suspected something like poor solder, and I knew there was insufficient tinning and solder, but I never thought it was so poorly done. It seems everything this man touched was done incorrectly...

For money?
If you live to be 80, you will do things you shouldn't too, just because you did them before

I suppose I should be more forgiving after having spent $4500 so he could turn 3 rifles into hammered sh*t.

That's tough to hear knowing that in his prime he was very good.

It took 3 rifles before you stopped the bleeding?
