So I have been watching the old mini series this weekend. If there is any historical accuracy to it, it would seem that some of Montana was settled by Texans. LOL.

The story of bringing Gus body back to TX was very loosely based on a true story of a TX Rancher's body being brought back by his trail boss. I can't remeber for sure, but I think it was Abe Blocker. I read about it years ago in a old J.Frank Dobie book on early TX Trail Drivers. It's a very good book, with lots of stories Dobie took from first hand interviews with some of the old timers.
A lot of Larry McMurtry's books are based very loosely on actual historical data.

The Woodrow Call & Augustus McCrae characters were loosely based on the real life Charles Goodnight & Oliver Loving. Deets was based on the real life Bose Ikard , a slave turned cowboy. When Ikard died, Goodnight wrote the epitaph quoted in "Lonesome Dove." It says: "Served with me four years on the Goodnight-Loving Trail, never shirked a duty or disobeyed an order, rode with me in many stampedes, participated in three engagements with Comanches. Splendid behavior." http://articles.latimes.com/1999/jun/27/local/me-50709Mike

Frank Dobie on the old time cattleman and trail drivers.

Watched it again with the wife about 3 months ago. Lonesome Dove is In my top 2 mini series off all time, with the other being Band of Brothers. Saw an interview write up of Robert Duvall recently where he said the Guss character was his all time favorite of any role he ever played.

One of the reasons Goodnight toted Loving back to Weatherford was so he could receive the Masonic funeral service he (Loving) wanted. I believe Ikard is buried in same cemetery there. Isnt he Curdog?

Weren't cemetery's segregated back then, Bob? Meaning they probably couldn't bury Ikard in the same grave yard as Loving?

Woodrow Call, Tommy Lee Jone's character, was reasonably close to Goodnight as far as size and mannerisms.
Augustus McCrae, Robert Duvall's character, was nothing like Oliver Loving, but was true to Mc Murtry's characterization of him in the book.

I don't know if it is the same cemetery, but Britt Johnson, the Black man who was the model for John Wayne's character in "The Searchers", was supposedly dis-interred from where he was originally buried [about 3 miles from where I'm sitting] and re buried in Weatherford by his family.
