A 20ga with adjustable stock, target loads, would be more practical.
But.
Outside of that, am sentimental about my first firearm, an H&R break-action .410, full choke. Learned the ropes with it and hunted it like any 12yo boy would. And since I didn't know it "couldn't be done", and had no one to teach me one way or the other, I self taught myself to trip a little Trius trap thrower pulling the rope with my left, mount the gun, get on target and break clays in the farm field with that gun. Yes it was a challenge, but birds are cheap and shells back then still were, and I got the hang of it. Wasn't easy, but didn't know it was "too hard". I know I hunted grouse with it but don't think I got any before gifted a 20ga Moss.500 mod and slug barrel setup (biggest f'n POS there ever was).
So anyway a 20ga would be more practical for obvious reasons. But I wouldn't say your idea is a bad one, either, as a teaching firearm/first gun. Mines a barn gun now.
