I have a good friend who lives in Capetown, RSA. He is an engineer who can expect no more promotions. He is also a Reserve Police Officer with the rank of Inspector.
The following exerpt is from a recent note from Colin. It kind of makes me wonder if where RSA is today where we will be in the future with the constant pressure of the liberals to dumb down the population.

Would not suprise me in the least, abd this new "Homeland Security" trash scares me even worse. It give the gov. too damn much power to disregard the Bill of Rights.

T LEE,

Yes you are right. Could end up smelling like Gestapo or KGB.

And with POLITICALLY CORRECT as the excuse to do it to all Americans equally we could be in trouble. Especially if the left takes over again.

Regarding the Home Land Security data base, sounds way too much like George Orwell's 1984. Any people who would surrender liberty for security deserves neither (to paraphrase B. Franklin).

Hawk,
Times like now require a people with real fortitude. I am afraid that all these years of liberalism has weakened our population beyond repair.

Well just saw an item about how they will now start tracking Iraqui's in our country. Hell if we don't trust em, boot em. That or maybe the .gov plans on renovating the old internment camps we had for Japanese Americans in WWII!

This is gonna get out of hand real fast I have a feeling and we are gonna be a poorer society for it.

Norm, you're exactly right. There is an extremely simple solution to this whole Arab terrorist problem, but the point isn't to solve the problem, I'm afraid, but rather for government to exploit the problem as a means to an end, i.e., tighter and tighter surveillance and control over the American people. Can't have anyone talking against the government on the Internet, after all. They might start resenting their loss of freedom and decide to do something about it. Funny thing is that when this was a free country the government had no reason to feel threatened by its own citizens.

All too simple for institutional government minds! They must complicate thinks to the point if insanity before they can understand it and we can't any longer. Job security!

Norm, it has always been the powers behind the throne that actually rule a country. For a brief shining moment, we were the one exception to that rule. We fell into line around 1910.

By "brief shining moment" I meant, of course, in relation to the history of civilization. We were a free country from 1776 till about 1910. Since then, the web of statism has been spinning steadily around us. Most people have no notion of what American liberty was all about, and so still believe they live in a free country, just because that's what the old saying says. Not so anymore. The average Pakistani is more free than we. Oh yes, we have far more in the way of creature comforts and personal security, but those things do not equate with liberty. Liberty is when the government doesn't know your name, and doesn't care to know. Liberty is when the government doesn't know what kinds of firearms you own, and doesn't care to know. Liberty is when you can do what you please on your own land, without first checking with the EPA, or any other agency of government. Liberty is when the government has no idea what you do for a living, or how much you make, and doesn't care to know. We were far freer under King George III, I assure you.

I recommend G. Gordon Liddy's new book, When I Was a Boy, This Was a Free Country. Good read. Give you an idea what I'm talking about.

Not "Where we're heading", we're already there. Welcome to Germany in the late 1930s.

You should have seen one of our regular's posts at the "old place" about how we're all paranoid and the whole deal about guns is whether or not they fit into the "sporting purpose" category.

You're right, Twodogs. Sporting purpose my eye. The Second doesn't apply to hunting rifles, but to military style battle weapons. The idea behind the whole constitution is to protect the nation against tyrany.

Besides, even if they banned all the semi-autos, next on the list would be these "deadly sniper rifles that have no sporting purpose". Gun control isn't about guns. It's about control.

I don't care if you have a half track with quad fifties on it as long as you put the rubber tracks on it before you drive on the street with it!

TRH,

That "brief moment of freedom" was the century after the Revolutionary War, when individual freedom and arms possession was relied upon to protect the society and liberties of all American citizens.
At one point in time, it was Law that "all travellers be armed, as, if in their journey they became set upon by highwaymen or brigands, the task fell to them to rid society of that scourge, and not let the responsibility fall upon another".
Unbelieveably, most of the early states that rigorously employed those laws, are now Socialist strongholds where firearms ownership and self protection are forbidden by perversions of the legal system. As I've said repeatedly in the Forum, every time a criminal is killed by a potential victim, it's a permanent paycut for a judge, at least two lawyers and a bailbondsman.

For graphic proof of where our country is headed, look in the Town Square Plaza of Grand Rapids, Michigan. Near the waterfall of the river in the Plaza is a very tall flagpole, which since the Clinton Socialist Expansion Regime, has flown the United Nations (Socialist Conglomerate) flag ABOVE the American flag! Over ten years ago, I asked some of the locals how they could let that happen . They all shook their heads sadly and said"We didn't have a choice, it was decided for us when our state politicians swore allegiance to the U.N. ".
