The LGS has one for $450. Other than a few scuffs on the wood and some rust on the trigger guard its very nice. To be honest if I hadn't promised the wife a new washer and dryer today it would already be mine. Even at that I tried to renege on the washer and dryer but she through a hell of a fit. Is this as good a deal as I think it is? I don't get paid again for two weeks and I'm already sweating this out because I want it.

I love the 6mm.

I had one in 6mm years ago, and it shot just fine. In addition I have also owned 788s in 243, 30-30 and 22-250. All of these shot just fine too but truthfully I have never found the magic in the 788. They shoot good but not any better than say a savage 110 or a ruger 77 or a remington 700 or winchester that I have owned. The first 788 I bought was $90 new in the box and was about all the $ I had as a young newlywed. However for nearly $500 used I think there are better buys out there than a 788. I think in another thread I saw where close out Ruger all weather Hawkeyes are being sold for $499. No contest IMHO. I just recently bought a nos Weatherby vanguard I for $305 again no contest IMHO, so there are better buys to be had if you look around so don't put yourself in a $$ bind or in dutch with your wife for a 788.

I wouldn't sell mine for $450. Nor would I buy one for that amount for the reason bangeye pointed out.

You can buy a new Howa 1500 from Whittaker's for under $350, but not in 6mm Rem.

It's only a good deal of you *want* it, otherwise you are buying on price alone. If you like to flip stuff to try to make money, I suppose that works. I personally don't as my time is worth more than that and I don't really like selling stuff. If I did I would open a gun shop.

Do you have any other 6mm Rem's? I have a 6mm M700 and like the cartridge, but factory ammo is scarce, limited in choices, and expensive. Reloading fixes that but you have to get and be able to replace brass. Usually that isn't a problem with 6mm (it was tougher a few years ago) but you I'll pay more for it, so it may be cheaper in the long run to get a .243. Again, the cartridge is slightly superior to the .243, but I would probably devalue an 6mm $100 over an identical .243, but that's just me (and I own a 6mm and a .243). Also, you may have a harder time selling it if you want to be rid of it down the road.

I have passed up a lot of 788's through the years. Even one in .44 magnum. But this is a 6mm and that's why I can't get it off my mind. I already have a 660 .243 so it won't fill some void but I just really want a 6mm. Maybe it won't be there in two weeks and that will make my mind up for me. But if it is then the only thing that will stop me is if I come to the realization that I can get more gun for the same money.

I've owned a few 788s back when they could be bought reasonably in the $250-$300 price range. These days the market price has gone nuts and I for one will not pay $500+ for a budget rifle when I could get a Rem 700 BDL or ADL for the same or less.

Wouldn't mind owning a 6mm Rem 788 myself. I've passed up buying a .243 or 308 788 the last couple of years in pawnshops or LGS here in the Houston Tx area. Guess I've seen at least eight of them. All I recall, in decent condition. Prices ranged around $400 to 450 for them.

My father owned kinda a hardware store with some sporting goods in it, when Remington introduced the 788. Can remember seeing a Remington catalog back then in Dad's store with their new 788 rifle in it. Chuckle, wish I'd bought one back then.

I had a 6mm 788 as my first bolt action rifle. I killed ground hogs and deer with it before upgrading to a 700 bel. I have not looked back.

I still have the 700. It is not going any where.

I have owned three 788s. All were right hand models. I am a lefty and decided to go all left hand rifles and traded the last 788, a .30-30, for a Contender frame. with the ambidextrous Contenders I can hand down guns usable to my right handed family members.

I've got a 788 in 30/30 that I picked up for 300 bucks and I don't think I'd sell it. had one in 223 awhile a go, wish I still had it. If it were me I'd buy it.

Offer them $375 Or $400 and that you'll be buying ammo and what else you need for it.

Cabelas has the same gun, in lesser condition and without a scope, for $575. I feel $450 is very fair.

I had a .223 and .308 in 788. The .308 was left-handed. They both shot well. Like a dummy I got rid of them. The only problem with a 788 is that parts are REAL hard to come by, now.

It is too bad that there is such a lack of rifles in 6mm. I have an old model 700 that is a tack driver and has killed over 100 white-tailed deer.

That is not a bad price on that rifle from what I have seen around.

A friend has one in 6MM and has been looking for a magazine for years. For some reason he can find but 6MM. He has tried making one from several other caliber magazines but they have not feed correctly.

They're easily found on eBay, or directly from Numrich Gun Parts.

For $475 plus shipping, I will sell your friend a 6mm magazine. Plus being a nice guy, I will throw in the rest of the rifle.

It'd take something way more exciting than an old beater like that to tempt me into risking serious domestic disharmony. This is the direct opposite of thinking with your winky; thinking against your winky.

They were great $100 rifles in 1967, and still are.

When I was a poor starving college student, I wanted a .223 bolt action for varmint shooting. Not being able to afford a shiny new Remington Varmint Special, I settled for a 788 in .222. The plan was to rechamber it to .223. I bought a box of Winchester factory .222 ammo to establish a baseline, and was simply blown away. Shooting off the hood of my car using an old Weaver 6X scope, I was printing 5-shot hundred yard groups you could cover with a dime. Needless to say, it did not get re-chambered.

I have a 223, 22-250, and at one time had a 243 carbine. All of them are good shooters including the carbine but sold the carbine because of the noise. That thing was crazy loud.

There isn't a real shortage of 6mm Remingtons...

anyone can get one just like I did..

an action ( 700 LA), a 6mm barrel ( 1 in 7 twist on mine), and a good gunsmith... mine was done by John Noveske before he got into the AR stuff, when he was operating out of the garage behind his dad's house, here in town...Stainless steel Pac Nor reject barrel, threaded and chambered for $75 including the price of the barrel.....

sounds real trailer park ghetto, but it happens to be the most accurate rifle I own...

back on topic.. the only 788 I'd want is one chambered in 30/30...or 35 Rem if they ever made one of those...

Brass is the problem.

I always wanted a 6mm, but finally settled for a .243 so I could actually shoot the thing. Not much practical difference, except maybe barrel life for those that shoot a bunch. That 7mm/.257/6mm case just looks right, like the .222 and '06 family.

I still won't patronize ruger for past sins...

Every 788 I've shot or bought has shot better, easier than about almost every 700 until I started messing with the 700s... I had only one, a 22-250 that shot really well from teh get go to be as good as the 788s...

But to be fair their triggers suck, but dang they tend to shoot unbelievably well and who cares what they look like in case thats brought up.

If only comparing factory ammo, then I could see the possiblity of others shooting as well as 788s...

our first 788 would put Rem corelockt bullets, 5 of them into groups you could cover easily wiht dimes... consistently... in 243.... I had not seen a 700 that would do that without work until the 22-250...

I have a set of 6mm dies if you end up needing a set.

What did you decide?

He went to the SHOT show in Vegas and closed the shop down until the 28th. I have some time to figure it out but I will let you know if I get it as dies would be a good thing to have.

Actually,its simply less than Cabelas want for theirs, but it has nothing to do with the value. I bought one for my son for his first gun 40 years ago. I wish i had bought a lefty 6mm for myself back then. But that was then and this is now and i wont pay far more than a gun is worth just to own one.
