Thought I'd pass along that the local cabelas has a beautiful Dakota 76 Classic in .416Rem marked down from $5999 to $2999 with $250 off that price. Seems like a hell of a deal for someone looking for a safari rifle. It's of no interest to me but I figured I'd pass it on.

I don't see it in a Washington Store but they have one in Colorado but looks like it's spoken for. http://www.cabelas.com/catalog/sear...416&nttWithin=dakota&x=0&y=0

You never know if it's available until you call on it. I've called on a couple that were listed as "available" but were gone. A rifle I bought last spring is still listed as "pending".

For that much money I would expect better wood.

The original price was way high on the sightless, bare bones, piece. I had an early 416 Rigby with much nicer wood and a lot of extra bells and whistles that I bought for half of what I sold it for a few years ago. Once in a while one does see a Dakota bargain.

Yes, looks like Cabelas recently ordered in a bunch of "stripped" Dakota rifles at what looked like attractive prices, at least for Dakotas. But they had ho-hum wood, no sights, and were pretty plain-looking. They didn't sell, so now they're being discounted pretty heavily.

I've fondled that one. It is quite nice and at very tempting price. I just can't justify the outlay for something I'll only shoot on occasion for chits and giggles.

I thought it was pretty dam nice for an off the shelf rifle. I too have no need for a big bore like that but it's never about need. grin
I sold my Remington KS in .375 because I only shot it 4 or 5 times a year and if my .338 can't do the job I'm going bigger than.375. Lol

Correct, but, one with descent/nicer wood and an extra grand spent on a proper quarter rib sight along with a barrel band sling swivel and banded front sight would do lots to improve the guns and still be well under most retail prices. Hoping they wouldn't have the stocks drilled for a front sling swivel stud though.
