Anyone know anything about these

Put me down as a no...

Well I looks to be well made and comes with different rod tips....it was in a pawn shop with a Ross reel....I bought it for my nephew....

They make a number of different models... most run to the aggressive, very fast side of things with a lot of power. For a newer caster over-lining would probably help by reducing the need for perfect timing.

They are very good rods, especially for the money, with an outstanding and fully transferable warranty. You could do a lot worse!

By over lining... You mean go up a line size.. I does feel stiff..

The SA GPX line is a 1/2 line size heavy and works well for stiff rods. I have heard good things about echo rods but try and only buy made in the USA fly fishing gear if I can.

Yes, going up one weight on the line will make the rod bend a little deeper giving you more leeway in your timing. As someone else noted there are lines made a half-weight heavy as they come. I am not a fan of them in general. If you need the extra weight you need the extra weight and a half step is not usually enough for short casting improvements.

Obviously, the more line you have in the air the more it will weigh, and quickly...

What weight and model is it?

Why don't you like Ross...? They seem fine and the fly shops brag them up...don't own one myself I have lampson but have considered ross...

Ahhh...the Echo 2 is a dandy rod for big fish. It is primarily designed for saltwater and big fish where a lot of serious lifting is expected. They lay extra carbon fibers in the bottom of the rod to increase strength for lifting.

It weighs a little extra because of the fibers. They do not make any light rods in this model that I remember and several of the models are over 9'.

I took one to Patagonia last year at this time for Jurassic Lake. The trout were huge and the wind fierce... It is not a beginner's rod. Overlining by two weights would not be too much for newer casters and it will handle it.


Ross reels of old were pretty decent... then they got cute and started "engineering" some "reel" winners. Now they are basically a click and pawl with minimal drag capacity and short lives.

Lamson, by way of comparison, has identical guts in every model and they work without wearing out. We do brutal things to reels on a regular basis, and the Lamsons just keep ticking along. I have and use at least a dozen different makes and models of reels from Hatch, Hardy, Lamson, Ross, SA, TFO, Fin-Nor, Sage, Loop, Orvis, Abel, and more I have forgotten right now... new Ross reels would not rate consideration even at the bargain prices you can find them at lately.

I have smoked a number of Ross reels in a day.

Thank for all the info looks like me a rod made for the Pacific NW or Alaska ...if fishing for cutthroat there is always a chance of a steelhead..
I guess not the best rod to give my nephue to learn on but Its too late now...
The Ross has a disc type drag not a click..older one I guess seems fine..good to hear about lamson I bought one for my son and liked it so well I had to havnt one.

IIRC the only disc drag Ross reel is the Flystart, a very entry-level reel.

Rick Bin bought a Lamson at my suggestion and then another... before he knew it they had multiplied in the closet and he had about 30 of them... be careful!!!

Its a 4 wt so not a steelhead rod by any means but it feels stiffer than most
Yea I'm a sucker for American made quality...I think the boy will be fine with it as he doesn't have anything to compair to...he moved to Utah from Nebraska and will be fishing the bear and Logan rivers...neither big water but good fishing...

Very cool! I did not realize they even made a 4 wt in the 2. Another point is the tips that come with the rod are different. One is super fast, stiff, while the other is softer and easier to cast.

One tip is labeled A the other D...does that mean there is B&C also...

The A tip is for "accuracy" and it is the softer, easier tip to cast. You probably already guessed the D is for "distance" and it is the faster tip.

They are carried in lots of true fly shops, but not the box stores. They are not expensive. I like them a lot.

No B&C tips...

Rods are like cars you need to test drive them to find the make and model you prefer. Hard to do in a pawn shop. Ross makes some good reels, some not so good, as does Lamson. I have a couple of older Ross Gunnison G-2 reels that have held up for 20 years. As well as a newer Lamson reel. And they all have been reliable.

Sorry, but have to agree to disagree on Ross making good reels and Lamson making dogs.

The old Ross reels were good for the era, hardly exceptional though. Their recent attempts have been poor to disgusting on virtually all fronts. Ever had a Vexis come apart on you in the middle of fighting a good fish? Virtually everyone that fished with one and hooked a decent fish found out about that little piece of engineering...

And Lamson reel models all have the same drag internals, from top of the line to bottom. Cast versus machined from billet coupled with the amount of machining determines the price. All are good reels.

Fishing in Alaska should sure test equipment..I really doubt I'll stress it like you do but plan on hitting some crappy and a good large mouth might test it some..

I went to college at CWSC which changed to CWU while I was there... a moon or two ago... and had some beyond incredible fishing in more than a few places around WA.

Below The Dalles dam in May for smallmouth bass was unreal. Both size and numbers were completely off the chart. I saw headed and gutted fish heavier than the state record at the time...

I fished the North side just below Dallesport. A small byte with a navigation marker is a clue worth remembering.

Crab Creek had some fancy steelhead fishing once I figured it out...

Mainstem Columbia had some serious steelhead, too.

I spend most of my time lately in Nebraska on the farm. But my kids are still in Washington and I still have my house in gigharbor. Son and I just started fly fishing sea run cutthroat..wow I can't believe I loved the 15 years and never explored that fishery more...we were always too busy chasing springers on the Columbia or steelhead on the cowlits and such..
For now it will be farm ponds for crappy ant it can be hot with some big fish that have never seen a fly..

We have the northernmost runs of searun cutts within 30 miles or so of here, as the crow flies, but it takes a bit to get at them... they are a lot of fun!

Just a bit more information on Echo. They are designed by Tim Rajeff, one of the finest fly casters in the world. Probably in the top 5. He cut his teeth at G Loomis where his brother Steve is the rod designer. Steve is considered by many as the finest fly caster in the world. Both brothers started as guides and have been in the fly fishing industry for many many years. Simply stated they both know what they are doing. But Joan Wulff could make a mean cast with ease despite her diminutive size... timing is everything.
