Hey everyone,
I am considering my first McMillan stock purchase, and I'm having trouble pulling the trigger...so to speak.
I'm looking for a stock to put on my Winchester EW SS Model 70 in .308. I like the Bell and Carlson stock it currently wears, except that the grip angle is open/shallow enough that I have a really hard time getting good purchase on the stock when shooting (maybe I have bad wrist mobility?). I'm primarily a bowhunter, but when I do hunt with a rifle, this is my one platform for big game. It is used for everything from antelope in the plains to backpack hunting for elk in rugged mountains. I'm 6'4", 195#, have larger than average (but not huge) hands, and have a thin face.
I am initially most attracted to the McMillan Hunter for the closed grip angle, monte carlo comb, cheekpiece, and some cast off. It looks like a bit much though, and I'm concerned it wouldn't be that handy to carry, which leads me to the other contenders. The Pre-64 Monte Carlo or the Supergrade. They look more svelte but I'm concerned I would be back in the same boat as I am with the Bell and Carlson regarding grip angle.
Which would you recommend??
Thanks in advance, Mark

You want the hunter, palm swell, more vertical grip and great ergos,
Very few people here have any issue whatsoever with the Hunter, have two myself, and their my favorite.
regarding the not being friendly to carry, that's all in your mind.
I would pick the hunter way before the Supergrade, especially with a .308

I'll second the McMillan Hunter. I'm 6'0 and 195# also have large hands and a thin face and it feels perfect. Great stock off hand and on the bench for me.

Mark, My 9.3x62 wears a Hunter version and I like it a lot. The forearm is actually fairly thin. Have mostly classics, but the Hunter sounds like what you are looking for. Good luck with the draws this year.

I'd go with a hunters compact for that rifle. No question about it. I'd also probably go with the edge fill since it is a 308 win.. Here's an EW I had. I put it into a hunters compact edge: My 270 fwt. wears a hunters compact as well. It's about the best balanced/handling rifle I've had in my hands: Personally I wouldn't go with a Sako style stock on a Winchester model 70, but it's your rifle..
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

I don't have a stock recommendation per se.
I'm a sucker for the McSwirly finish.
Good luck in your decision.

Go with the Sako/McM hunter.
I'd trade my Hunters Compact Edge for one.

Mcmillon Edge on my LH MRC 6.5 X 284 had to fit it myself originally for a LH Win 70 SA WSM. Rifle is for sale! Mcmillon Sako Hunter on my LH Ruger Hawkeye in .308 love the way it fits. Lousy pic.

KK, which one do you like better? I see the Sako hunter is set up for a lefty, while the nice thing about the hunters compact is it is an "ambidextrous" stock. I have big hands, the sako stock looks like the grip would be a little too close and confining for my hands...

The Hunter did not like the looks and had never handled one till I bought one and wow, now I know why people like them. I wear X large gloves and grip feels fine to me. Also love the old Rimrock/Borden stocks. Top Ruger 35 Whelen LH Borden stock converted to LH Middle Ruger 06 Borden stock converted to LH Bottom Win 70 LH 06 Borden stock converted to LH repainted same as Ruger 06.
