.....which factory rifle do you suggest?

Looking to supplement my stash of bolt action rifles with an AR-15 in 5.56. Ideally gun is factory and off the shelf at a major sporting good store. Knowing next to nothing about gas guns I'm tapping the infinite wisdom of the 'fire. Primary use will be varmints and range practice.

So, what say you?

Varmints like coyotes at 100yards or gophers at 400?

Range practice like tiny groups on paper or hitting steel at 300yards?

Colt 6920, Daniel Defense.

Also, handle whatever a bit. If it comes with a quad rail you may or may not like that.

Colt, 6920, Sig M400, Stag, S&W M&P........usually readily available for something between $850ish to around $1,100.

Daniel Defense if you want to spend a little more money.

Lots of votes for Daniel Defense. I'll have to do some research. Anyone know who sells them in the PNW?

gophers at 400 and tiny groups, then you are serious.

Serious enough that you are risking it buying a rack gun....

You don't need to buy big name either but you can.

My suggestion get in touch with a couple of top notch AR smiths, Dtech, and White Oak Precision and there may be more... and have a discussion.

I'm thinking what you need is a built upper at a minimum from the sound of it.

Go ahead and ignore all the advice you got except what Rost said.

I'm not even sure why people bothered answering, especially if they're gonna answer with a brand and no model.

It's not likely to be off the shelf.

As Rost says, a custom build will likely be necessary.

His"new" objectives & "an off the shelf, rack gun", are a little bit mutually exclusive...........but it can be done.

Besides the custom route as Rost 495 suggests, there are some high end ready made guns that will get him there but it doesn't sound like he wants to pay that kind of money.

About the lowest end "rack" gun that will provide what he wants (that's still a little vague) is the Stag Varmint rifle at around $1,100........IIRC, they will guarantee a 3 (or maybe it's a 5) shot group into an inch...........obviously not quite up to the 10 shot standard called for here, but pretty good nonetheless. wink

Stag model 6 will do all he asks for about a grand. Only drawback is on the heavy side. The gaurantee is 1/2" at 100 and neither of the two I've shot had problems with that in the real world.. Both mine and my brothers hung well in the black rifle challenge.

Looks like I want my cake and to eat it too.

I've been looking at Daniels Defense V11. Thoughts?

Gophers at 400 and a fan of tiny groups does not equal chrome lined barrel...

dye7,

Blue and rost gave you some good advice. I would just add that you shouldn't try to make one rifle do all things. I'm guessing here, so this may not apply to you specifically, but if you want a bench gun... then get one that will shoot tacks. Pick the barrel of your choice, but don't complain if it's heavy.

On the other hand, if you want a handy-dandy varmint/coyote upper, then get one. But don't complain if it don't shoot absolute bugholes, day-in-day-out, week-after-week.

It's easy to fall into a trap where we try to make one rifle do more than it can. Life is much simpler if we set realistic goals. You may need two different rifles or uppers. Or maybe not.

You're just getting your feet wet so I wouldn't worry too much. Tackle the high priority needs first and it should fall into place, but if you try to make one upper do all things you'll probably not be happy.

Jason
