For what it's worth, I had one in .308.

It was great for brush/treestand hunting and offered a reasonable increase in range over my M94 Winchester.

I did have to replace the trigger, the OEM trigger was horrible.

It was fairly well balanced considering its' size, the length of pull is shorter but it worked out OK for me. Shooting groups from a rest could be challenging in comparison to a heavier rifle, but if I did my part good....

It was loud

I liked it well enough, sold it to finance a divorce.

I had one. I got rid of it because it wss too loud. My kids also liked the Kimber Montana better. Before I bought it I asked about it and got several helpful replies.

Then I bought mine and did a too long review of it. The summary is that after I had a trigger job and found a load it liked it was a nice rifle, but again, I just didn't like how blasty the barrel length was.

The photo above is my 12-year-old nephew's first CO Muley last fall.

That Compact .260 was my oldest son's 1st centerfire rifle bought new in '01 when he was 11. He killed a big WT doe with it that fall for his first deer.

Several more deer and coyotes were zapped with it by my kids and I for the next decade.

My son's interests turned to girls and cars for a few years and when he started hunting again he felt the .260 was too short for him do traded it to my brother for his venerable Tang .270 Ultralite.

Because of CO's goofy reg that kids can't take BG, other kids in Larimer Co. Got to zap antelope, Muley and elk with it.

Almost all of those animals were taken w factory 120 BTs or same-same Accutips. One shot each.

It's always hit inside 1-in. And it is straight as it came from the factory. After Nate got that enormous buck my brother decided to finally put a better scope on it.

I never notice muzzleblast when hunting nor do my kin. Electronic muffs when hunting without a suppressor is my new plan to save what's left of my hearing.

Another member has posted many photos of big Western game he and his family have taken with their treasured SS Compact .260.

Here's my then 13-year-old daughter w a big azz bull coyote she dropped so fast it looked like it was sucked into another dimension Christmas '05. Hoping to get our family .260 back in time for her 10-month-old son in Oct. 2020.

I'm a big fan of the Rugers, but learned my lesson about short barrels about 45 years ago with a Rem 600 in .308. Even with muffs, the concussion gets to me. I don't worry about one or two shots a year in the field affecting my hearing. I do plan to get something for dove hunting or anything else that involves a lot of shooting.

A $7 spring from Ernie the Gunsmith can do a lot for stock Ruger triggers, without affecting the reliability. A little stoning is supposed to help more, but I haven't gone there yet.

I've got one in a 223. It's a handy little rifle but the blast is tough even in that little cartridge. I had a Model 7 in 260 with the 18 inch barrel and it got sold. I won't own another rifle above a 223 with less than a 20-22 inch barrel.

+1 on the Ernie's spring.
