No need for that.

Two of the Steyr's above have 20" barrels. The first is a Mountain Rifle in 308 Win. No granted it's not a magnum and is only loaded with 46.5 grains of Varget. However the second is a 376 Steyr and it is loaded with 65 Gr. of H4895.

That would be roughly equivalent of the charge in the 6.5 Leopard.

Here's a pile-o-pigs I shot within 90 minutes(six shots, 4 hoglets, guess I'm slipping. What would Davy say?).

I do not recall the muzzle blast being an issue.

At the range I wear hearing protection. One can always wear dispoable ear-plugs when afield or an electronic amplification device that suppresses noise above a certain decibel level should one choose.

Now if the OP was to do said 6.5 Leopard with a 20 inch barrel and then install a muzzle brake, that would definitely be a "bell ringer" without hearing protection.

Ask me how I know.

Like I mentioned previously, education can be costly.

Muzzle blast is a good thing. Saves a lot of BBQ time.

I am continually astounded at how quickly people make up their minds on little evidence or none at all.

The barrel was chamber in 260 but theres plenty of shank left to rethread and rechamber. I'm thinking I want a 20" barrel and shoot the 120 ttsx. Im looking to build a lightweight deer rifle. These are not "optimum" components but I think it will come together nice and fit my niche as everything I have now is longer barreled and heavier. I'm doing away with the barrel nut (just dont' like the way they look). Also gonna vent the wood stock alot and cut some weight there. I woundering about muzzle blast from the 20" barrel, any experience with it in mag caliber on short barrels. Thanks.

Yes, you are wasting your time. smile

Think 6.5 Remington Magnum with extra jalapeños.

If you want a hot 6.5, spring for an appropriate barrel length. Longer doesn't have to be too heavy.

I say go for it.
My guess is the only people that think blast is a problem are people that have never actually shot 20" barrels (no muzzle break of course).

Short or long, you will be getting more MV than a creedmore of the same length.

been shooting a 20" 416rm for years with no issue.

Right........

20" Ruger UL in 30-06 count?

18" Rem 600 in 243 count?

16.5" Encore in 350 RM?

16.5" Encore in 30-06?

I may have shot a few short barrel guns.

Without being a jerk, yes. My little 18" barrel 243, which I've had since 1975, will clear things off the bench if it's in front of the muzzle. The 350 was worse. I shot it from my bench when I first got it. I had just re-planted a patch of grass in front of the bench. The bench was 3' tall. It cleared the straw mulch away for 10 feet. I shot it inside my garage one day when it was raining. It knocked the clock off the wall. I love short barrel rifles but not in high potency flavors. There is a noticeable difference in blast when you stand beside a short barreled gun when it goes off compared to a standard barrel and cartridge.

Your experiences may be different but I didn't care for the most folks never shot one comment. I've owned and shot a bunch of them. Blast/percussion is definetly worse with short barreled guns.

Agreed. Not my best post.

I will just leave it this; I have shot 20" barrels for 30+ years and have never noticed blast being an issue.

Thanks for the opinions guys. I think I'll scrap the 20" wsm.
