I just got my fast twist 270 finished. I have quite a few Nosler LRAB 150s and a couple hundred matrix 165s on order. I could use some load data if anyone has any with either bullet. I loaded up some 150 LRAB with re22 but haven't had s chance to hit the range with them yet. I've heard re26 might be the powder to get for this application but haven't found any except for an 8 pounder and didn't want to invest in that much without trying it out

The only ammo I've run in it yet is nosler 140 BT factory loads and they average at around and inch. I'm hoping to do much better with reloads.

Ah, a kindred soul.
I have built a number of faster twist .270 Win's.
The barrels and twists have been:
Kreiger 1-9
Bartlien 1-9.25
Benchmark 1-9

Of those, the Benchmark was most accurate and was much easier to clean. All were CM by the way.
Velocities ran about the same as 1-10 twists.
I think the 170 Bergers need more case but I don't think much of them for general purpose hunting. I am hoping Hornady will make some 150 ELD-X bullets. With the new slow Enduron powder I expect 2950 in a 22-23" tube.

The 270 is really great for a hunter who travels. You can find something to make it go bang pretty much everywhere.

I have shot thru 36" of eland on a number of occasions with the 130 TTSX.

Really liking your fast twist 270 Josh, looks to be pretty much the perfect mountain gun.

RinB what kind of speeds were you able to get with the 170 gr Berger?

My wife took this old cow moose this fall with the 130 TTSX @ 3000fps. Complete pass through both shoulders at just under 100 yards, dropped like struck by lightening. Great bullet for big game I just was looking for something with better BC for long range.

I shoot 150 BTs in my 270. It's got a 1 in 10" twist but I get pretty good accuracy with H4831SC. The accuracy got better the faster I pushed it. I think I ended up at around 57 grains but the cases and primers didn't show any signs of strain. This is a 300 meter group:





The book lists loads from 51 to 55 grains with a 150 gr bullet. You might work up slowly and see what the results indicate.

Let us know how it goes. A good shooting bullet with the BCs those Matrix bullets have would make a good LR load.

oldslow, I would call that pretty good accuracy! sheesh

I shoot the Matrix 165 grain VLD bullet out of my .270 win 1-10 24" barrel at 2840 fps, which is pushing the limit. It's not the ideal twist but I still get under .50 MOA at 600 yards. I shoot a 10 inch steel plate at 1000 yards. Dallas Reloads reloads my ammunition using H1000 and it's been great.

The Matrix is a frangible bullet and is the best of both worlds -- has a very high sectional density to penetrate at close range while still getting great expansion at low velocity/long range.

I devastated a 700 lb 6x6 bull last year at 200 yards with the 165 Matrix/.270 win. Full explosive penetration. Tried to post my pics but I'm getting an error message.

Would a 3.4 Winchester magazine work with the matrix? What coal are you running?

Never used the 170 Berger. It came along later.
FWIW, my various buddies keep making off with them.

Mine with the Benchmark is off having a facelift. Going to try the 165 Matrix and H1000 next.

I've been playing with the 170 Berger recently in a plain 1-10 twist Model 70 Featherweight Classic, with the standard 22" barrel. Am getting excellent accuracy with 59.0 IMR7977 for right around 2800 fps, and the Miller twist-rate program on the Berger website says it should have a functional G7 BC of .313 at typical hunting temperatures in the valley here, around 4000 feet above sea level.

I used 7977 partly because I'd gotten very good results from it in various rifles, and because Hodgdon lists data for the 160 Nosler Partition and 180 Barnes Original round-nose, so I had somewhere to start. I figured 2800 fps would be about max to stopped there, but there isn't the slightest indication of high pressure. Brass is Winchester and primers CCI 200.

Thanks, I just got my 270 back with a Benchmark 1 in 9 twist and will watch for your load development and the 165 gr Matrix which is on the list to try.

Interesting you are getting such good accuracy from the 1 in 10 twist. I'm only at around 400 feet above sea level so my 1 in 9 twist should work according to Berger's twist calculator.

Have had my rebarreled 270 for less than a week and things are looking good after the first time out with IMR 7977, CCI 250's, Nosler cases and the 160 gr Partition.

From a 23" barrel:

58 gr - 2743 fps
59 gr - 2804 fps
60 gr - 2817 fps

Accuracy is quite good so far with no signs of excess pressure, taking it black bear hunting this weekend

Yes, the fragments were mostly in the offside hide but some passed through.
