I'm asking now, because, who knows I may not be here in 7 or 8 years. She will be coming into a family of hunters on both sides. I have 99F in 243 circa 1959 that I got from a great guy here on the forum. My son, her dad to be, shot a deer with it last year. I hope to get one with it as well. This would be first choice, I guess. My question is, this gun or look for a 99 in 30-30 for her? Bet you guys will say get her both..... I do have a Savage 25 pump 22 for her as well, along with a Savage 220 single shot in 20 gauge.

Sounds like the .243 is accumulating family history so I'd continue the tradition. Add a small picture album of real hard copies to record the milestones.

I have given my grandsons a Daisy Red Ryder at birth. Carve their name in the stocks, and it is my first gift to them. That way the other grandfather can't beat me to giving them their first gun !!!! Congrats !!! It'll work for a girl, too.

Grandchildren are the icing on the cake!! Ditto! CONGRATS JIM! I have 2 grandaughters (9mo. and almost 3yrs) and they truly do bring a smile to your face every time you see 'em. The feeling cant be described, it just has to be experienced. Dave

Write her a note and put it in the butt stock of whatever you decide to give her to be opened sometime in the future. And, whatever you do for this one you have to do for the others yet to come. So, keep buying and using then you can give her/them a gun/guns that Grandpa used... it's a win win!

Congratulations! I'd go with one 99. I think that one rifle, or one of anything, teaches a kid a special kind of appreciation that they cannot get anyway else; and also you do know the story about the gal who only owns one gun... I too have to vote for a .30-30. There's nothing wrong with that round and it is an American classic. You too may want to start her out with a good peep.

Congratulations Jim!
Start with spending a bunch of time with her outdoors, looking for "treasures" (feathers and owl pellets and such) and skipping stones, then give her her first sling-shot, then a Red Rider, Then an Ithaca M66 410, then a Savage 24, ...by then she can pick any of your 99's that she wants, and You'll have new hunting Buddy!
The trick to giving a kid the life-long gift of shooting, is giving them something they can actually shoot!

Well, she's here!!! All are doing great. Will get to hold her late this afternoon. She's already dreaming about Savage firearms..... Thanks for all the well wishes folks. She came into the world at 11:55 PM on Sunday. She will be keeping her folks up late for years to come, I suspect.....

The way she has her eye squinched up, I think she is dreaming of looking through an aperture sight on an H in 22HP. Congrats, Joe.

Well, she's here. What did you decide on? Or is that what the face is about "... Gramps said he was giving me a Savage but I haven't seen it yet!" Congratulations, Jim.
