I googled the guy in Gillette, he doesn't have a criminal record. I'll google the guy in Buffalo later. The guy I'm looking for is Frank Mahoney. The paper is dated 1955. Thanks, David

I'm wondering if that "(Mich" at the end means he was a Michigan resident out hunting in Wyoming, and did something that got the cops to confiscate the gun. Too bad there isn't a county or jurisdiction listed.

It looks like "Mick" to me. Like an Irish nickname.
The rifle came from the Sweetwater County Sheriff's Department. That's the county where Rock Springs and the town of Green River are located. Google didn't show anything for that county.
It's a 303, the only caliber available in 1899.
I'm going to the Wyoming Weapons Collectors show in Riverton this weekend. Hope to do some reloading and shooting next week. If I do I'll take it out. From the looks of the muzzle I don't expect much accuracy. David

Clean it well, you might be surprised. Or with a bore like that, a 303 caliber bullet might actually help things out.

It's not even a real nickname, "mick" is a slander for an Irishman. The cops in the midwest might have had harsh opinions of east coast Irishmen coming in to plunder their fare town.

Its also an abreviation of Michael, probably the most common one used here and Britan. My son is chrisened Michael but has never been called anything else but Mick. I think over there you might use Mike opposed to Mick.

Mick directed at the irish is aimed more at the catholic section where as Paddy is used as a more inclusive term

Hows that for going off topic, Jeff started it LOL

So David you are probably looking at an irish catholic owner who spent most of his life in Australia, boy of that gun could talk

I think it would be a heck of a story if the gun could talk. I was hoping to find something on google. I may try the Sheriff's department next time I'm down that way. David
