Perusing our fine Wally Mart yesterday, I happened upon the clearance aisle. There, at a greatly reduced price, was a whole bunch of gun barrel rests that attach to your boot laces, so you can rest your shotgun barrel on your foot. Yup, a fiiiine idea...

Is that to keep the mud out of the barrel? I can shoot a hole in my foot without any help. At least my WM cleared a complete package of brass jags and has some cartsridges mrked down right now. Best I ever did anywhere was 25-06 Federal Premiums for $4.00 a box, bought all 6 of them some yearsago.

Actually those are fairly popular with trap shooters. I actually saw a discussion the other day about extractors vs ejectors and those were refered to as useful in handling your gun. Go figure

May be popular, but is not something I would care to do.

Not stupid at all, for an open double (or single) barreled gun. The practice is nearly ubiquitous in Britain where doubles are used almost exclusively for driven and "rough", what we would call upland, shooting. Keeping the muzzles off the ground keeps them clear and protects the ends of the barrel, and the little pad you saw protects your footwear.

Clearly not a good idea for pumps and autos.

Been shooting since I was 4. Not fancy stuff, just a lot of shooting. There is no way I would be comfortable resting the muzzle of a gun on any part of my body. Still think it's stupid, even if the cool guys do it.

Lots of trap shooters use them, with an open O/U while waiting for your turn.
Once you are up, you point in a safe direction, load, close breech and get ready.
I haven't used them, but can't see their fault. No way I would use it on any other kind of situation or gun setup.

As mentioned above trap and skeet shooters use them a lot. When on station but not shooting a double barrel is always open. putting the muzzle of an open double barrel is not a safety issue and prevents shotgun barrels from sweeping other shooters wile waiting for the shooters turn.

I have never used one and did not allow them on my 4H shotgun club but in reality is is not big deal.

The manufacturer's sale rep was a genius for being able to sell such an unused item like that to a large store chain. He must have gotten a hold of a buyer that was clueless. I wonder if he's sold any BS to a dairy farmer yet? I bet he could. Why isn't this guy selling used cars, he'd be a millionaire.

If you think it's dangerous to put the barrel of an unloaded and broke open shotgun on your shoe do you wear a bubble suit when you go for a walk? I am amazed though that they're sold at WalMart.

It is not dangerous, as the gun is empty. I just think it's bad protocol. Say what you will.

A bad protocol is humping around the woods with one in the chamber.
