I lament the fact that most European nations have militaries that are largely ceremonial. They are not a fighting force any longer in any real sense.

I am glad you qualified those remarks as "most". Given the ones that have sent troops around the world such as british, and so on. And i am sure that some of my croat relatives in the 90's would probably not agree with that. we by expenditures may have the largest military in the world, but it for sure isn't the only game in town.
