Heard that from a member in Germany...rutting buck is no bueno! Rio: The few fallow I have seen in Texas were dumb as chalk...and I can't say that about even a retarded Axis Glad to hear about the meat during the rut...cause thats when I was thinking of going.....doh!

My one fallow came from Argentina. One of the tougher critters I have hunted. I hunted 4 days before even putting a round in the chamber, and I wasn't being picky. They were pretty spooky, so I suspect the ones you've seen in TX weren't hunted all that hard.
Mine wasn't huge, but was pretty average and tasted just fine (to me at least).

Shot and eaten a stack of them. As mentioned above rutting bucks can be untastey but spikers and does are good gear if treated right. I've only sampled axis, red, sambar and fallow meat. I will agree with the guys above that Axis is pretty hard to beat but I think the best back strap steaks that I've had are from about a two year old sambar hind in good condition. A couple of guys replied in my thread in the Aussie forum that fallow are close to whitetail in taste. Fallow in my experience can be very switched on and hard to stalk in country where they're chased a bit. Rattling them in the rut works a treat. Have had them near run me over!

This is all good to know. Thanks for the replies guys! Yes, the ones Ive seen were hardly hunted at all. I would suspect fallow would taste close to whitetail, which is nothing to sneeze at Axis is indeed the best IMHO I was thinking about a fallow hunt later and I will avoid their rut!
